    Redrafting the 2017 Draft

Just noticed that ESPN AFL has posted an article on the 2017 draft and then posted the order based on performances since

    Original 2017 Draft order:

    5. Fremantle - Adam Cerra
    6. Collingwood - Jaidyn Stephenson
    7. St Kilda - Hunter Clark
    8. St Kilda - Nick Coffield

    20. Richmond - Callum Coleman-Jones

    Re-drafting the 2017 AFL Draft:

    1. Sam Taylor (pick 28 - Greater Western Sydney)
    2. Aaron Naughton (pick 9 - Western Bulldogs)

    16. Harrison Petty (pick 37 - Melbourne)

Does anyone want to challenge the order ?
There are some explanations on how this was determined.

Saints sort of acknowledge their recruitment hasn't been great. How much better would they have been if they selected Naughton?
Carlton's done better at the trade table than they have with their recruitment and that was a disaster for them as they haven't got much from both Dow and O'Brien.

    Re: Redrafting the 2017 Draft

    How is West Coast performance?
They could have drafted Tim Kelly ahead of Brander and Allen then gave up 2 first round picks and I think 2 x 2nd round picks (with bit and pieces coming back) that was regarded as pick 2 using the draft value index with Geelong only to see his form taper off and he is now rated as 14 in the redraft.
    The Brander pick was 13.
And the contract Kelly signed with WC was around 800K a season.

Geelong got him for about 200K a season and got more from him.

If it’s based on performance how the hell is Fogarty ahead of Fritsch, Ryan or pretty much everyone from 11-20? Sure he improved this year but he’s been super patchy prior.

    Re: Redrafting the 2017 Draft

Switkowski another who would be close to top 20. So would Miers from the Cats.

Fritsch is clearly top 10 on that list. He's annoying as all get out but he can play.

How is Davies-Uniacke (and Rayner for that matter) ahead of Zac Bailey?? Getting a few kicks in the North midfield as they lose by 20 goals doesn't make you the 4th best player out of this draft...
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

    Re: Redrafting the 2017 Draft

I guess since it's a redraft so there is an element of growth still being taken into consideration, but a few players are out of whack there.

Would argue Naughton should be one ahead of Taylor, both awesome but Naughton is playing a harder role and has shown he would be a very good if not elite player playing Taylors role anyway.

LDU and Rayner didn't really have any runs on the board until this year, I think LDU has shown he can at least do it, although hard to judge in Norths side, Rayner I don't think has shown a real abaility to change games unlike Bailey, and Bailey Fritsch.

I rate Liam Baker super high and would have him near the top.

Petty is fine but is playing as a third lock down tall in a good side with two of the best key backs alongside him, Baker and Mihocek have done far more in their careers to date. I have him on the same tier as the likes of Jack Higgins, Brent Daniels, maybe James Worpel although his stocks have dropped massively.

Also wtf how is Tom McCartin not even mentioned? He is in like the top 7 for games played, and is a genuinely very good key defender in a good side.

Ben Paton is pretty tidy and around the Starcevich and Richards mark, probably slightly behind. Jiath in that group as well.

I'd rank it as something like (mostly based on what they have sown to date, plus some room for growth, like a 70 30 weighting):

    1. Naughton
    2/3. Taylor/Brayshaw
    4. Bailey
    5/6. Kelly/Balta
    7/8/9/10/11. Ryan/LDU/Fritsch/McCartin/Baker
    12/13/14/15/16. Cerra/Rayner/Fogarty/Allen/Moore
    17/18. Ballard/Mihocek
    19/20/21/22. Starcevich/Powell/TDK/Richards
    23/24/25/26/27. Daniels/Petty/Paton/Miers/Switkowski
    28/29/30/31/32. Stephenson/Clark/Worpel/Farrell/Guelfi
    33/34/35/36/37. Coffield/Higgins/N. Murphy/Payne/Holman

    Naughton
    Brayshaw
    Taylor
Bailey (he may end up #2 if he’s played mid more)

I wish we could pick after the Saints every year.

Davies-Uniacke had a very good season this year but it's taken him a while to display that form.
Fritsch is a very dangerous forward and has been for at least 2 seasons and as you say Bailey should be right up there in the calculations.

Brayshaw has been a great pick up.

How disappointing has Stephenson been after a very good start?

Didn’t Naughts cook Taylor when we played them last year?

I think so but we wouldn't mind Taylor would we?
Just goes to show that a lot of highly rated players don't become stars.
