Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 2, 2023 vs St. Kilda

This is the Round 2, 2023 edition of the weekly Bankers and Anchors thread. Once the game against St. Kilda is concluded post your nominations for:

The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play

Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.

Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.

The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 2, 2023 vs St. Kilda

    Bankers

Garcia, hard at it, won some contests, kicked a goal

West, hard at it, hurt some Saints

Crozier, started badly but then hard at it, some courageous defending

    Anchors - same old

    Appalling skills and decision making

    So many Dogs tackles broken

F50 entries - just bombing it in

Lack of spatial awareness and players getting run down
The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.

    Bankers

Bont- tried to inspire his team mates.
    Jones- actually tries to defend

    Anchors

Chompers anti-defence philosophy- what a joke! we are a laughing stock!
    Desire- where is it?
Skills & composure- it left the building with desire

    Bankers

Garcia. When he tackles, he tackles hard. When he shepherds he makes a point of physical contact. Up on his toes and working hard.

    Anchors:

Macrae, actively sought to do the opposite of what Garcia did. No appetite for any physicality except for when there is no choice.

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 2, 2023 vs St. Kilda

    Bankers
Garcia, Scott and Naughtons attack on the contest
    Bont and English skill levels
10 minutes in the second quarter

    Anchors
We play like a team rebuilding
The lack of defensive efforts is astounding - players just strolling over to the ball
We have no space - none, yet opposition teams able to transition end to end at ease against us
Stagnant hall movement - no risk taking and no overlap run or playing on
Sick of this sh*t already and it's round 2!
Kicking 1 goal in 90 minutes of football!

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 2, 2023 vs St. Kilda

    Bankers:

Bont - tried to will us back into it.
    Jones - competed hard
Crozier - lacks some class but throws himself at everything.

    Anchors:
    - Running. Second week in a row where we got out run by about 10 kms across the team/across the match. Not one player in the top 5 Kms covered. Only Bailey Smith in the top 5 sprint effort (16).....Brad Hill had 38, Sinclair 24, Mason Wood 23.....what are our guys doing?
    - Coaching/game style....we've known its been a big problem for a while. We rely completely on overwhelming amount of possessions and if any of a) getting deprived of the footy, b) high pressure, or c) teams halting our ball movement - occurs, then we are stuffed. There's no plan B. Add to that, that we want to play a fast moving game when we have a slow team, overweight with tall players and it makes absolutely no sense.
    - Our ability (lack of) to defend the ground. Was a worry with Dunks leaving....already looking god awful .

We're in real strife as a footy club.

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 2, 2023 vs St. Kilda

Banker: Josh Bruce. Certainly has his limitations but with no Gardner, Keath absolutely cooked and Jones out for most of the first game and probably not 100% in the second Bruce has suprisingly been the rock down back. He cut out the short kicks against the Saints and actually provided some drive out of our back half. He lacks a yard of pace to keep up with the athletic-type forwards but that job usually falls to Gardner. He has been very servicable and I've been impressed.

Anchor: Jack Macrae. What is going on with Macrae seems a shell of his former self. No longer strong in the contest, looks slow, looks disinterested and has become a liability in the middle. Time for a change one of Baz / Treloar should take his place.

Wow. I never knew that. Such an important stat. Maybe Dunks was right.

    Nah, Dunks not right.

What we have been missing is Dale and Ed running and bouncing the ball and cutting through the defensive zones.

It's fairly dire if we are pinning our hopes of an improvement in this area on just 2 players.

Not sure who said that. We were talking about running and distance covered and these two normally cover alot more distance than they have been and is only part of it.

Agree with this. Two games does not a success make but he has been good so far.

Do you have their numbers from Rd 1 & 2 and how it compares to years gone by?
