    Loaded midfield draft hey?

Is there ever a year when the recruiters get to November and they start salivating over the next year? Last year they all wanted to protect their future picks due to how deep the 2023 pool (05 birthdays) was...now it's all "yeah, these guys are ok - but wait until NEXT YEAR - those '06's, they can REALLY play....".

They want what they have not got those guys.

I think we should remember that with this years crop AND next years we are talking about groups who missed most of a key development year due to COVID restrictions - it's going to be hit and miss. Of course the recruiters are all zippidy doo-da about next year - it takes the pressure off getting their decisions right THIS YEAR.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

While you’re absolutely right (next year is ALWAYS a super draft), it was definitely a talking point this year around teams having midfields filled with underage players. There were concerns by some over the fact this was arguably robbing this years draftees of opportunity because multiple representative and Coates league sides were opting for using ‘06 draftees in the middle. So while the overall quality of the draft is surely up in the air, it does seem like the quality of midfielders is in an entirely different league next year

Sam Power has fiercely protected our 1st round picks during his tenure. I can't see him using our future 1st in any deal to help us secure pick 4 this year. If 10 & 17 doesn't cut it then walk away is my view.

Yes only our club could do something as stupid as that. I usually don't take rumours too seriously but this one is so ridiculous it has me worried. If Power does this he's dead to me, he needs to go.

That just makes any notion of trading futures insane! Thanks for insight

What if that player coming back to us was Mabior Chol?
Becomes that ruck replacement backup and would we move him to defense.
Not that I'm sold on him and I would rather keep the F1.

Doesn't Chol have "competitive"issues. Not sure Bevo would want to replace Lewis Young or Josh Schache with someone else he would not play.

Just so hard to gauge the depth of drafts a year or two earlier. I like this years draft though, it might be a bit light on in the top order but it's an even talent pool and there could be depth right through to pick 40.

Spot on, there are plenty of other options that will net us good players.
The deal needs to make sense for both clubs.

Agree Tomlinson has always been ordinary and more so since his knee reco. Will be another list clogger on a 3 year deal. Let North take him.

Nothing really new here but it summarises the state of play amongst the clubs

    https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/dep...c9839ad8e93804

    WESTERN BULLDOGS

The Dogs are reportedly in the mix for off-contract Saint Nick Coffield, with the Brisbane Lions the other club linked to the former top-10 pick. They’ll have to strike a deal with Port Adelaide for fringe ruck Jordon Sweet, who’s already request a trade there. Considering he’s played 11 games in five seasons. Fellow fringe player Buku Khamis has also attracted rival interest, reportedly from Collingwood and North Melbourne. The whispers around a possibly Geelong trade involving Bailey Smith – despite having one year left on his contract – have cooled. Perhaps the biggest Bulldogs trade watch though will be a pick swap, with rival club recruiters suggesting the Dogs were in Position A to secure Gold Coast’s Pick 4, with Tasmanian midfielder Colby McKercher and Eastern Ranges small forward Nick Watson linked to that selection. The Dogs’ Picks 10 and 17 will almost certainly be part of the deal, while there’s a possibility their future first-rounder could be involved should the Suns send something else back to the Dogs.

That's a better summary but interesting there is no mention of Lohmann and more pleasingly no mention of Tomlinson.

Yeah there is, in the article

    HAWTHORN

Exactly what the Hawks do this off-season is a little unclear. They’ve been linked to a host of names including Geelong’s Esava Ratugolea, North Melbourne’s Ben McKay, Western Bulldogs’ Kai Lohmann and Fremantle’s Liam Henry.

So the article reckons Hollands is the best young player GCS would give up.

    If it was:

Our F1 for their F2, and Hollands (young mid, taken pick 7) & Graham (KPD)

Would you add the F1 here?

We should never ever trade a F1.
