    Re: Early Trade Rumours 2023

Maybe I'm sick. Maybe I'm scarred. Maybe I'm a masochist. Maybe I need serious help or maybe I'm just constantly in brace position for my budget flight to fall out of the sky. But I almost welcome shocktober. English to eagles for pick 1. Naughton to SOMEWHERE for pick ?. B. Smith to cats for pick 8. trade 10 and 17 for 4. Go to the draft with 4 top 10 picks including 1.

BTW I do love those 3 players but.........

Logic says this. 1. You don't need a million dollar ruckman to win a flag. 2. Naughton's kicking is probably always going to be a problem and we have a conga line of tall emerging forwards for the first time in my life. 3. Smith seems to be a ' tiny weeny bit' self obsessed and...... man.........his kicking has become hideous.
    4. Last time this happened we won a flag.
Total apocalyptic, scorched earth, shock and awe, agent orange, volcanic, shocktober mayhem might be the answer.

I am probably totally wrong, and will also be relieved if none of this happens. I'm just the hysterical person in the disaster movie screaming "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE" 'til someone slaps me across the face and the plane levels out and starts cruising again. Complete with a soothing announcement from the pilot and in flight service resuming.

Naughton is a keep for mine.

He makes footy fun and we are hard to watch at the best of times. He's not perfect, but if we're trading him, we're doing it wrong. Simplistic view but he's also a pretty bloody good player and he's young.

Open/happy to trade English and Smith, however.

    Ha love it.

    Complete disruption.

The Pies vindicated Bevo's ruck thoughts.

I’d keep Naughts. Happy to trade English presuming we have a tough ruck in the mould if the people’s bears to replace him (Lobb backup), or Grundy if Pies still paying for big part if his salary.

Not sure about Bazza. I’d be sussing out if it looks like he wants out and is only staying with us next year to inflate his salary and if that’s the case and if we can obtain fair trade value now then yep, let’s pursue it rather than end up with Dunks Mk2 next year. Surely Bont and some of our players would have a pretty good feel about what Baz’s loyalty to the RWB.

Are there rumours that Essendon are going to rise up from the ashes and actually win a final next year ?

Is Goldstein going there for potential or for more years ? I don't get it.

Feel similar. Like to keep them all but might be a bridge too far.

In order of keeping most wanted first :

    Baz (we have no mids)
    English (we have no rucks)
Naughton (if only he could play in defence)

When was the last time we had one? I mean a good one? Is there someone more recent than the very excellent Bob Murphy in that role c. 2008-2009?

I'm struggling to think of one.

I actually love Naughton in this role as a player btw. We've looked so dangerous in the past playing him high. We haven't gone that route for some time but the best I've seen us play in the Naughton years is him in the high forward role. People talk about trading him but I wish we had another one of him down back. Young player, still massive ceiling.

Given his ground game and his dynamism he could do a KT 1980 and win a Brownlow further up the ground.

But I digress, Billings is worth the punt.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Doesn't Billings play wing these days?

Much to his chagrin and potential mismanagement of him as a player, yes. He probably has been playing on a wing. Always reeked of a forward to me. Maybe he's just one of those players that does really well against us and it has skewed my perspective.

To be fair the Bulldogs are the last team he should consider we'll absolutely positively play him out of position.

Probably something to do with his 40% goal kicking accuracy over his career. I wouldn’t trust him near goal either.

Max Gawn and Luke Jackson killed us in 2021 - both million dollar ruckmen or close to it.

Teams that have a single advantage win flags. Right now, we don't have an advantage - Hawks' left-footers club, be it handball club, the Richmond 'swarm', Melbourne's ruck duo + intercept marking duo, Collingwood's run, etc.

Ours might have 'tried to be' the 4-towers up forward but that failed pretty spectacularly

Absolute madness to even think of getting rid of Tim - I can't believe people even think it.
