Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 13, 2023 vs Port Adelaide

This is the Round 13, 2023 edition of the weekly Bankers and Anchors thread. Once tonight's game against Geelong is concluded post your nominations for:

The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play

Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.

Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.

The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 13, 2023 vs Port Adelaide

    Bankers
    1. Tom Liberatore doesn't ever take a backward step, an example many should follow.
    2. Caleb Daniel, another fine game.
    3. The Bont, plays well and gives his all every week despite playing injured.
    Anchors
1, The selection committee - obvious stupidity every week.
    2. The quartet of Bruce, Naughton, A Jones and O'Donnell - all non contributors.
    3. Some very average umpiring decisions - come on down Nathan Williamson.

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 13, 2023 vs Port Adelaide

    Bankers
    1) Treloar is pure class, wish we had more of his calibre, hardly misses a target and seems to find space
    2) If all the team had the tenacity and never give up attitude Libba shows, as well as his amazing hand passes in traffic we would have win a few more of the close ones this year
    3) Daniel is a very important player for us, such a great link player and clever

    Anchors
1 We depend too much on too few week in week out
    2) We desperately need a few class, quick midfielders to bolster our ageing, slow midfield
    3) Our disposal from backline - heart in mouth stuff - how many goals did we give up from turnovers - 4 or more?, we are really missing JJ and Richards

    Bankers
    1. A great game from Libba. All heart.
    2. Caleb could be leading our B&F.
    3. Marras work ethic. His leads are often not rewarded. They should be.

    Anchors
    1. Did we lose this at selection? Bruce and JOD were terrible.
    2. I hear so much about Bevo’s versatility mantra but I don’t see inspired moves. If ever there was a night to switch around stone- cold Naughton and Bruce, this was it.
    3. Umpiring is more inconsistent and baffling than ever. We haven’t had the rub of the green the last 2 weeks.

Post of the week, possibly the year.

    B

    Marra - impressive player
VDM - high effort, stuck a bunch of tackles

    A

Luke Beveridge - uninspired, boring and staring down the barrel of a second consecutive failed season.

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 13, 2023 vs Port Adelaide

    Bankers

    1. JUH's continued improvement. He is becoming more confident in his abilities each week, especially his movement to find space on a lead
    2. Libba's contested work and hands tonight just typify his importance to us.
    3. Daniel such a smart ball user

    Anchors
    1. Umpiring was putrid. Not the free kick count, but the inconsistency. It played a role, not the only one, but it played a role in the outcome
    2. Our defense was a rabble. Bruce a down and out liability. JOD as well, Jones for most of the game was in noman's land. Duryea and Scott (when in defense) had some moments they'd like back too.
    3. English, Lycett and the umpire got in his head tonight and he was as ineffectual as we've seen in some time. Hopefully a blip on an otherwise fantastic year.

1 - I agree that our selection process is a head scratcher. No one is blaming JOD but he would benefit from some games at Footscray
2 - Bevo's versatility mantra works if you develop players to do that and last night we did throw Bailey Williams back when Keath was off with concussion protocols but given his comments that Naughton isn't going back it's clearly not going to happen.
3 - It wasn't a good game by the umps.

    Bankers
1 - Great to have Cody back adding some spark to the forward line. That last goal attempt by him could have changed the whole game.
2 - Liberatore was set for a big night. His spirit and endeavor was outstanding.
3 - Marra just needs to nail one more of those set shots and he was at times quite brilliant last night.

    Anchors
1 - The selection of James O'Donnell needs to stop. I think he's a terrific prospect but it's troubling that we are 'chips in' with him.
2 - Rory Lobb doesn't play like a KPP and isn't the threat up forward like we should have wanted. Lets hope he comes good soon.
3 - Bruce had a dirty night but we should stick with him. Tend to think he should be moved forward.

I'm chucking in a bonus anchor
4 - More of our supporters and the wider footy audience should have attended last nights game. Despite the loss the standard was excellent and it's a shame a prime time game was so poorly attended.

    Bankers

    1. Libba. Take it to the bank every week he rarely has a bad game.
    2. Daniel?s kicking. Boy oh boy it?s sublime and a rarity in the side.
    3. Macrae. He?s playing a new role, taking one for the team and quietly getting it done every week.

    Anchors

    1. Turnovers. With our game plan of 4 or 5 forwards it?s disastrous when we turn it over. The opposition overlap with their free back.
    2. Naughton. Somebody tell me what is going on here. JOD is playing better.
    3. Bevo. I?m over the half forwards to the contest. Both half forwards were up at the contest at times , it either leaves them an extra to intercept or overlap (if they don?t follow) or it just creates more pressure around the ball and causes turnovers. Rarely do we spread with an extra out of the contest as intended.

Also why were some booing JHF early? Drop an anchor on their heads.

Do you think because it was the Friday night before the long weekend had an impact? We are going away for the weekend, but made the call to the game last night at an inconvenience. We live eastern suburbs and are going to the surf coast. A lot of people took Friday arvo off and went away instead. I heard it was one of the busier days at the airport too.

    Friday night games suck.

You don’t get home until midnight.

It was Port I mean they had very few there.

For some reason neutrals don’t go to our games.

I didn’t go. I’m not travelling 2 hours each way to watch our poor skills, errors, poor selections, and us being out coached against inferior opposition(not this week). I couldn’t care less about the game standard. Give me a win anyway.

So weird. He's a jet and he's got a bit of spunk about him. He's the kind of player that makes watching footy fun.

    Bankers

Jack Macrae just keeps toiling away for us. Had some poor performances early in the year and has responded.
Marra is a natural. Leads to good spots, a good user of the ball up the ground. He's gonna be a class above.
    Caleb Daniel is a genius.

    Anchors

Naughton. Pantsed by Aliir, a shadow of himself when the ball hit the deck.
English. Must get more from him.
