Bankers and Anchors: Rnd 3, 2024 vs West Coast

This is the Round 3, 2024 edition of the weekly Bankers and Anchors thread. Once today's game against West Coast is concluded post your nominations for:

The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play

Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.

Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.

The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

    1. Goal kicking. We seem to be getting better.
    2. Getting percentage.
    3. Fringe players fighting hard to keep their spots.

    All may this long continue.

    Bankers

Treloar- wow he was super switched on today from start to finish. A play with 4 minutes where he continued to gut run defensively despite the margin brought a smile to my face.

Bramble - looks a super pick up. I'm struggling to see why he was on the outer at Hawks; adds a hard edge, not slow, looks good under pressure and whilst he can make some errors, he looks a better than average user of the ball too.

VDM- very solid performance today. But that has to be a benchmark for the baseline expectation each week from him.

    Anchors.
Nah. I'll leave that for others.

    1. Naughton - he was up and down the ground, 20 disposals, 8 marks, and 13 score involvements, 4 goal assists

    2. English - He is like a mid in a big mans body

    3. Duryea - off Half back he really controls it.

    Anchors

The stupid AFL rule, for taking out legs. I am first to the ball, then a bloke falls over me, why should the other bloke get the free. Ridiculous rule

Bont - put him anywhere and he gets the job done

Even contribution - it's been a common complaint the last few years that we've carried too many, but not today. So good to see the lesser lights - Vandermeer, Bramble, West, Darcy, Gallagher, Sanders, Khamis, Duryea, Williams, Baker - all make contributions to the win. Next week when the coaches say 'we need every player contributing', everyone will know what that looks like.

Naughton - just has an animalistic desire to compete, his intensity is always at 100% and had some brilliant moments up the field today. Four goal assists. The dream teammate.

    Anchors

Clearances - somewhat of a happy anchor, because it would ordinarily be unthinkable that we win while losing clearances, let alone win so convincingly. It's a sure sign that our efforts to improve our ball movement and turnover game are showing fruit. Nevertheless, we would be better again if we can get back to towelling teams in this area.

Jamarra - had the reverse midas touch today, sometimes trying to do too much and other times just lacking a bit of concentration (dropped chest mark on the wing). After a good Round 1 showing, he's on the edge of selection with Lobb banging the door down.

Lazy handballs - felt like there were a lot of handballs that asked too much of the receiver. We got away with it most of the time but against better opposition we won't. Nitpicking here of course.

    1. Williams moving back is a bonus. He is much more assured as a backman. With the likes of Bramble, JJ, Richards and Dale we have many attacking options from the backline.

    2. Some of our swift handball movement was a delight. We need to do this against quality opponents - threading the needle creates options. Sometimes it doesn’t pay off but boy when it does it looks good.

    3. Naughton playing higher up the ground really plays to his strengths- aerobically but also allowing him to be one out with his opponent - this works either on the lead or as a contest. Also opens up the forward line.

    Bankers

    1. our centre clearances. Other teams will tear us up if we lose these regularly

    2. Dale needs to get his mojo back - a few clangers.

    3. Macrae looked underdone. Still keep him in as he will work himself into form.

    B:

    1. Treloar has turned it around the last two weeks. Much improved effort and physicality.

    2. Gags was impressive today. Ran hard, got rewarded, tackled well, used it well.

    3. Effort. It's rare you dominate a team for a full 120 minutes but I felt our efforts didn't waiver. That was nice to see.

    A:

    1. WCE are poo. They're in a world of pain.

    2. 1pm on Easter Sunday sucks as a timeslot. Couldn't make it today.

    3. Khamis' body work sucked today. Needs to be better in this area to make it.

    Bankers.
    1. VDM is coming of age , maybe it will take him 50 games to consolidate at this level? The opposition love to smack his head. The lesser likes of Khamis and Bramble were good to see their contribution. Khamis made a really good block in the last quarter to allow Jones to mark.
    2. Even effort and full 4 qrt effort ,even right to the end. Tackling was fantastic and really made them spill the ball. The chain handpass in the last quarter that resulted in a goal was very Collingwood 2023 like
    3. Naughton is so dangerous when he roams out of the fwd and uses his agility to out play his opponent.
    Anchor.
    1. Frees , by the umpire was terrible. 3 QTR time 8 to 17 free west coast favour.
    2. Holding the ball free when your first to the ball and your opponent has pinged your arms needs to change. There is no reward for the player who gets the ball first.
    3. The west coke thug who floored Treloar from behind should be suspend. Cowardly act.
WC are in a world of pain.

    4. We lost the clearances against a bottom side, so that is something needs to be examined.
