Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 5, 2024 vs Essendon

This is the Round 5, 2024 edition of the weekly Bankers and Anchors thread. Once tonight's game against Essendon is concluded post your nominations for:

The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play

Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.

Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.

The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

    Bankers

    Marra's marking

    West's all round game

    Macrae showing some form

    Anchors

Marra's goal kicking ( he was not alone)

    English and our centre clearances

    Too many broken tackles
The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.

From my memory. Their first six goals orignated directly from a free kick. Not a turn over. Not a stoppage. Either directly from a free kick or one or two possesions later.

    Bankers

    1. Darcy - his height and the ability to mark at full reach. Defenders can't get near it. Now to learn to kick straight under game pressure.

    2. Marra - See above.

    3. I got nothing else such was the horrible night at the footy

    Bankers

    1. No Bont no dogs. It was glaring tonight. That's probably not anyone's fault because you would just expect him to dominate each week.

    2. Skills. Missing targets by foot is one thing but even our handballing was sub standard at times. Our field kicking was shite and boring. Why do we switch play? Is it because other teams do it? Because it looks cool? To build supercoach points? How many times I see our defenders switch the play to the other side of the ground with no real plan once the ball gets there. Our switch is slow and that obvious that it was in yesterday's paper. A good switch is quick and uses the angles and catches team defences off guard. Its no surprise though with our best 2 creative play makers from D50 are being held to account in Daniel and Dale. While they cop their medicine for being out of form, we have to put up with the likes of Bramble and Baker to be our creative play makers. No wonder we got belted by a very average team.

    3. Umpires- they are always woth an anchor just for shits and gigs but tonight they earned their anchor. FMD Bruce they we quick to blow the whistle for the Bombers! We lost the game on our own but it made it harder with the gifts they received to keep them in the game early
They've done studies you know, 60% of the time, it works every time!

Why do we continue to play Weightman after he has dislocated elbow. This has happened twice now and each time for weeks afterwards he looks uncomfortable. Give him a spell to get it right.

Opposition teams are happy to let us switch play down back as they know our defenders are ordinary by foot when under pressure. We have lots of turn overs as you can see and sides pounce on it.

And we're putting him in at centre bounces while he's carrying it. Normally I'd love to see it, but not like this.

    Bankers

Duryea played one of his best games for the club, seems to have found another level when I thought he was totally cooked.

Jamarra is great to watch. I didn't think he deserved to play but glad he did, turned his form around. Still needs to improve his conversion to turn these good individual games into great ones.

Macrae hasn't dropped his bundle. His composure and clean hands are still a valuable point of difference through the middle.

    Anchors

Pretty clear cut anchors from last night, any one of these goes our way and it would have levelled the game.

Umpires - kept the Bombres in the game early. Every 50/50 seemed to go their way plus some howlers. Vandermeer's tackle on McGrath? He's just preventing the advantage, no way known is that fifty.

Poor conversion - made worse by them having a blinder in front of goals. Equal for scoring shots.

Centre clearances - we have dropped away in this area quite dramatically. Need to go to work on fixing our positioning, and probably rotating more players through to ensure whoever is in there is fresh. Centre clearances are all about reaction speed, agility, clean hands and intuition. All of these things tired players are not. Also - time to give Garcia a shot.

    Bankers:

Marra - our clear no.1 forward. Needs to fix the kicking though.
Darcy - Great talent. Is usually a better kick.
    Richards

    Anchors:

    VDM - I don't get it.
Buku & JOD - had shockers unfortunately.
Mids Group - crowding the stoppages and still losing them. Looked flat as a tack.
