CARLTON has emerged as a suitor for Western Bulldogs midfielder Farren Ray. It is understood the Blues are prepared to swap a player for Ray.

A deal could be struck in the rush before today's 2pm trade deadline.

Ray, a West Australian, would prefer to remain in Victoria and Carlton looms as an ideal destination for the 22-year-old, but the Blues must first satisfy the Bulldogs.

Any hope the Dogs had of swapping Ray for West Coast's Ashley Hansen has evaporated.

The Dogs were keen on Hansen, and it is believed the Eagles were open to talks, but the forward declared he wanted to stay in Perth.

Ray, the No. 4 draft pick in 2003, has attracted a trickle of interest from other clubs and was not prominent on the Eagles' radar.

But there is a chance clubs could flock late, hoping to pick him up at a bargain price.

The Dogs started the week wanting at least a second-round pick in return for Ray.

Ray's manager Ricky Olarenshaw has told the Dogs he will not remain at the club if a trade can not be struck.

Olarenshaw has made it clear Ray would nominate for the pre-season draft if need be.
