It was 83 as the Dogs piled on 10 in the first and a mate uttered the famous words. "We're on target for 40" , Umm didn't quite get there

We nearly did against the Saints that year when Templeton kicked a bag, 15.9 on Trevor Barker!!!!!
We kicked 33.15.213, in 1978 Google tells me. Your mate might have had that in the back of his mind.

I was at the game and my memory tells me Jock kicked six in the first quarter not five. (Or maybe I drank six cans in the first quarter being so pumped!) That was one helluva game. Talk about put the emotions through the whirlpool! Those games when you're in front all day and then you can see defeat writ large in red time place an inordinate amount of stress on the nervous system. I'm sure they played a part in my premature baldness and the nervous tick I used to suffer after enduring those tension packed last minutes of games like that. Jock was a great player for us in bad times and good. Will always be remembered fondly for his sterling efforts.

    Re: Interview With Jim Edmond

I was at that game. I recall it was an Anzac Day double header for some reason...? The crowd was enormous!

For those interested, here's the extended highlights... Actually, for any younger Woofers, here are the extended highlights!
For some context, we'd won the spoon in '82, sold Brownlow Medallist, Templeton, triple b&f Dunstan, Ted Whitten Jnr had retired, Geoff Jennings was finished and we'd seen club discard, Brian Wilson win the Brownlow - joining fellow discards Quinlan and Round as the previous four Brownlow Medallists! We'd also lost rd 22, 1982 at home to the scum by a still club record margin of 155 points...

Peter Gordon called October 2014 a tough week at the office, but October 1982 seemed catastrophic!

We then lost rd 1 comfortably to Geelong as Templeton bagged 8 for Melbourne... Then a minor miracle:
We beat back to back premiers (and 1983 night premiers), Carlton in Rd 2 in the upset of the decade
We beat a Templeton-less Melbourne in rd 3 (a Melbourne with one Les Bamblett playing for them!)
We beat eventual rampant premiers, Hawthorn, in rd 4... Minus an injured Doug Hawkins! To equal our wins tally from the entire '82 season..!
Then this... 10 goals in the first quarter against the previous year's grand finalists, Richmond

Jock Edmond at his best! No Hawkins, but Purser and Wallis starting out and Brian Royal on his way to the club b&f in his 5th game of league footy... The Cordy brothers, the McPherson brothers, the WA brigade of Sewell, Beeza and Purser, nick McKenna and Tits Kennedy.

    Enjoy:

It was glorious that day. It was ANZAC day but I didnt know it was a double header, I must have turned up just for the Footscray game.

The recruits we bought into that team were amazing. Guys like Purser, Sewell, Wallis, Royal, Kellett and Hansen came into the team in those first two games and played good footy straight off. That's ruck, rover, centre , CHF and CHB and fullback taken care of in one stroke.

And I think Jock kicked 5 on Curly Austin (Mark Austins dad) in that win over Carlton in round 2, with Simon Beasley being a decoy and taking all the defenders away from Edmond and Austin and Jimmy being too strong for Curly.

I might have the double header mixed up with another year. I remember going to the G in maybe 86 for a game against Richmond and there'd been either a Melbourne v Roys or Norf v Roys game on beforehand... Or maybe if was Norf v Melbourne..?

Yes, Chris Hansen. I recall the Hansen steak knives - Peter Foster - coming into the side later that year. Fitzroy were very strong in 1983. I wonder if Hansen and Fossie might've given them a couple percent extra.. Anyway, Foster, Purser, Royal, Wallis, Sewell etc.. It was Christmas time!!

I later learned in "Bulldogs Unleashed" that we got $200k for Templeton (who's knees were stuffed) and an incredible $150k for Dunstan (who played less than ten games for Norf) to fund all the recruiting.

A few parallels to this year. Down in the dumps, captain traded out, lose our b&f... Then several gun recruits unveil themselves.

Also, there was a bit of Jake Stringer about Edmond. Difficult, awkward match up. Tough to find the right defender to play on them when they're "on"..

The story about Collingwood paying us 100 000 to ignore a player we weren't going to draft anyway is good one too.

Good comparasion with Edmond and Stringer. They are similar players in between KP and a flanker but can play both positions, often at the same time. And they like getting in opponents faces.

    Both country boys too.

Yep. Positive. Don't think he was at Carlton as a F/S though. I think he just happened to be drafted to Carlton the way Shaggy was with us. I stand to be corrected. About the F/S, not him being Curly's boy. I'm sure about that.

Not Curly's son Twodogs! Mark Austin is from Adelaide, friends as a kid with Bryce Gibbs.

Oh OK. I thought that Rod came along to a couple of Mark's first few games for us.
