Bulldogs to play games in NZ

Cash-strapped Bulldogs tried to sell games to NZ for $1m

The Australian has been told that Western Bulldogs chief executive Campbell Rose wrote a letter directly to the New Zealand prime minister, John Key, several months ago, pitching the idea of playing two games at Wellington's Basin Reserve in exchange for a guaranteed return of $500,000 per match.

Rose and Key know each other from their days in yachting, although the letter, which was sent with AFL authority, was passed on to the country's peak sporting authority, the New Zealand Sports and Recreation Commission, for its full consideration. The time necessary to bring the idea to life in 2010 elapsed -- the AFL released its draw for next year more than three weeks ago -- but it is understood that it has not been shelved and may be revisited in time for the 2011 season, particularly as Hawthorn has joined forces with AFL NZ to establish a grassroots presence for the Australian game on the other side of the Tasman....

It's closer then Perth (and Darwin?) so not as bad an idea as it sounds.
Cooler climate too so the recovery problems experienced in Darwin will be mitigated.

    Well worth looking into.

No mention of the re-structuring of stadium deals that will assist us in getting closer to (and hopefully exceeding) parity in regards to operating costs?
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

I'd go too. Always wanted to see New Zealand and now I have the best incentive.

Great idea......and if they play their cards right and the scheduling falls in and around the Rugby World Cup next year 1) I'll be able to go ans see the doggies and 2) my kiwi friends can finally understand why when I get an oval shaped ball in myu hands its natural to try to bounce it!

It makes sense to me. New Zealand is little Britain, with the Red White and Blue colours and the British Bulldog - we have marketing appeal. I would get to some my old mum a bit more as well

I told her I'm taking Daniel to the Xmas family day and she asked if she could come as well! I reckon I've got her.
