Dogs to ensure smooth transition for Thorne

By Jennifer Witham 6:18PM Fri 27 November, 2009

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have formulated a detailed relocation plan for new indigenous recruit Shane Thorne and his young family to ensure their upcoming move from Darwin is as smooth as possible.

Thorne, 23, was taken by the Dogs at selection No.76 on Thursday night in the NAB AFL Draft.

The mature-aged wingman will move to Melbourne on Sunday minus his partner Jay and two-year-old daughter Jayla, who will relocate in February.

Encouraging to see the club taking all the right steps.

I still cast my mind back to Ezra Bray who was drafted by Geelong & feel its one of the more sadder stories I've read.

    I have to agree

I was impressed to see Dalrymple comment that there was a plan

If we move young guys from other states we have a duty to do it properly, and in return we expect players to give it their all

Sounds like the club is doing all it can to support Shane and his family which is great.

One would think Jarrod Harbrow might be the type of guy Shane could latch on to, to show him the way to go about making the most of the opportunity he has received.

    Here's another Thorne article...

Thorne happy to be a Bulldog
    Grey Morris | NT News | November 27th, 2009

WANDERERS utility Shane Thorne broke down and cried when the Western Bulldogs picked him at No. 76 in the AFL National Draft.

A day after his 23rd birthday Thorne got his greatest wish in life - a chance to play AFL football.

"I've got to admit I cried a fair bit and it shook me up a lot, it's going to change my life," Thorne said.

"The Bulldogs told me there were no definites at draft time and as the numbers wound up to the 60s and 70s I started thinking the worst.

"Liam Patrick was supposed to be a chance in the mid 30s and when he didn't get a club I thought I'd go the same way.

"Right now I'm rapt, it's a great result for myself and my family and the people who supported me for so many years at Wanderers and the coaching staff at NT Thunder."

Does anyone know how big + heavy he is?

Hopefully he has a good season with Willy, and can adjust to the Melbourne weather!

OK without sentimentality what a great club are doing the Ezra Bray story still saddens me greatly but at least the clubs (I am hoping it is not just ours) are doing things better for all of our young recruits .
    Well done doggies

If you go to the search function and enter his name the whole story is there it is well worth a read and I think it has helped with how clubs look after their young draftees

Thanks Strebla. That is sad. Hard to know where the blame really lies, sounds like failure by all parties. Ezra too, though certainly not the lions share.

Correct me if I'm wrong is saying he has a young family?
Really is the opportunity of a life-time for him and his family, lots of incentive to put his head down, bum up and make the most of it.

Yes, the club has organised a transfer for his wife's work to a Telstra shop in the Western suburbs, his daughter will be going to day care at the Whitten Oval and they will have a house not to far away. The club is doing everything in it's powers to make this work.
    The curse is dead.
