Julia Gillard in: "Move over Barry Hall"

We never heard much about her support of the doggies when she was a shadow minister.

I remember standing behind Gillard and a woman who I can only assume was her PA in a queue to board a plane. They were giggling like school girls and I couldn't help think that this person should never lead our country. Once I heard she was a former member of the socialist party I went off the idea of her being PM even more.

Footy and politics don't mix unless there is a photo opportunity in it.

Well comrade, my wife worked with her many years ago (in the 80's when she was a lawyer) and can vouch she has followed the dogs for a long time.

Whatever side of politics you follow, as a previous posters said, great to have the deputy PM talk about the dogs, instead of hearing about Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon.

Considering the history of our club in the western suburbs and the fact that Juila has lived there for a long time i think its great /appropriate she supports the dogs .

When she speaks she comes across like a real person and personally i think we would all be better off if there were more Julia Gillards in politics and less out of touch millionaires who seem to use their time in canberra as nothing much more than a stepping stone to a career in the corporate sector.

Whilst I generally detest Labor and usually vote Liberal or Greens, there have been two Labor politicians I've started off hating and they've managed to sway my vote, not by the usual sleazy tactics but by coming across as genuine. Kim Beazley was the first and Julia Gillard is the second.

Given the news tonight that Labor will vote in the morning on who'll be our PM moving forward, it's quite obvious these rumours about her leadership have been circling for months and let's face it — the prospect of being the “first female PM” means it's likely Julia could have thrown her hat in the ring 3 months ago and already be Prime Minister, but instead she decided to do her duty and her job and stick by the PM (publicly at least) no matter how much of a ****head he is.

This is the type of person I want associated with my football club. Glad she's the number one female ticket holder.

You do realise she was a partner at a Melbourne law firm making hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars a year?

A bit harsh, don't you think? Julia comes from a fairly humble background, parents moved here from Wales when she was a very young child, to seek a better life. She obviously worked hard to get through school and then university and become a lawyer - it's not as if she had "millions" handed to her on a silver platter, or comes from a family with lots of money! Working as a lawyer, representing the kind of cases Slater & Gordon take on hardly makes her a "top end Collins Street" type IMO! I wish her good luck with her new role, and I think it's great for the Western Suburbs to be represented by our PM! It's also good for our club, I would think.

I don't really have a problem with someone who comes from working class background and has educated themself and worked their way up, earning a living. Just wasn't sure where you were coming from - it seemed more like a personal comment about her?

FWIW - I don't really have any allegiance to Gillard and thought that what happened today was probably not a good thing for our elected government. However, as I said, I perhaps took your comments the wrong way and thought you were being personal about Gillard.

Slater and Gordon are hardly the what one would call the public sector..the bulk of the work they do is reresenting the working class....yes they have become very big but most of that growth has come from class actions representing workers against large multi nationals with very deep pockets. Thankfully Julia is a product of her enviroment and I would back her to not forget where she has come from or who she represents, including our beloved football club!!
