Daniel Giansiracusa to miss for Dogs

WESTERN Bulldogs vice-captain Daniel Giansiracusa is in doubt for Monday's clash with Fremantle after straining his hamstring.
Giansiracusa pulled up suddenly at training at Whitten Oval on Friday as the club prepared for the bye weekend.

The Bulldogs have kept the injury under wraps in the slim hope the midfielder-forward would recover in time to face the Dockers. But with that game at Subiaco, it's unlikely Giansiracusa will travel to Perth.

Dogs football manager James Fantastia said the club would make a definitive decision on Giansiracusa this afternoon.

"He just over-stretched. He was stretching for a ball in front of him and it pulled up a bit tight. He came in and we iced it up," Fantastia said.

"We don't think it's that bad, maybe he'll miss just one week, but we want to see how it's settled down today."

Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade is due to front the media later this morning where it's expected he will reveal the injury.

Fair loss for one of our best endurance runners prior to a Subi game, but Mitch Wallis deserves his chance.

Mitch sure does deserve it, I wonder if they will show his dad's famous hit on Heady at the same ground?

Perfect hit wasn't it! Put the Prince into lala land. Geez I loved the way Wallis played the game.

The comment afterwards from Wallis was gold.

    Some a few points:
    - Gia has obvious weakness and subtle strengths and I have defended him in the past
    - I think he is really struggling at the moment
    - Our fans are the new Richmond. I have made comments in another thread. High expectations aren't always purely positive. Our 'high' expectations really seem to come from a negative/desperate/frustrated place. The way our fans are at the moment, our perfect match for rivalry round is an intra-club.

Re: Daniel Giansiracusa to miss for Dogs

This story has just been updated to add Williams and Vez as possible outs.

WESTERN Bulldogs selectors face a nervous wait this week despite coming off the rest for the bye.

The Dogs' troubles don't end with vice-captain Daniel Giansiracusa's slight hamstring strain already ruling him out of Monday night's game against Fremantle.

Patrick Veszpremi will miss the trip to Perth after breaking a finger in one of the first ball drills of a solid 70-minute training session in light rain at Whitten Oval today.

And key defender Tom Williams had to leave the track midway through the workout with back soreness.

Goalkicker Barry Hall hardly trained and midfielder Daniel Cross was ordered to rest with flu symptoms.

Coach Rodney Eade immediately ruled out Giansiracusa when the experienced forward was restricted to light running today after pulling up sore during training last Friday.

"He won't play. He has just got a slight hamstring twinge on the training track, so we won't be taking a risk with him,'' Eade said.

After confirming that Veszpremi has a broken finger, the coach said: "That probably counts him out.''

Eade said of Williams' early departure: "He had a back spasm. It was all tight, they said he could've come back out, but it wasn't worth the risk in this weather. So, he should be right Friday to train.''

The back problems for such an important tall defender is compounded by the long flight to Perth before that last training run.

The injuries have left open the option of taking Mitch Wallis to Perth for his AFL debut.

Eade scoffed at a suggestion that facing the Dockers in Perth would be a tough opening assignment for Wallis.

"You wouldn't take him away from home? Of course you would. It doesn't matter where you play. You would be happy to get your first game wherever,'' Eade said.

Most of the comments in the Hun are disgraceful and posted by people who know nothing about football.

Some even call themselves Dogs 'supporters'

They probablty arent aware that Gia led the team for scoring assists in 2010, 2nd in goals scored, 2nd in scoring shot accuracy etc etc

Still I would prefer to loose Gia for this game than Griff or Cooney

Yep - even with his 3rd in the B&F, Griff & Coons are definately more important.

Gia is an excellent footsoldier, but not a game breaker like the other two.
