    Cats legend Bob Davis dies

    Jon Anderson
    From: Herald Sun
    May 17, 2011

GEELONG legend Bob Davis has died, aged 82.

Davis, who has been ill in recent months, was admitted to hospital on the weekend and died suddenly on Monday night.

He played 189 games with the Cats from 1948-58, including the 1951-52 premierships, and was club captain from 1955-58.

He then coached the Cats from 1960-65, taking them to the 1963 premiership.

Davis was recruited to Geelong from Clunes, having twice been knocked back by South Melbourne in an attempt to play in the VFL.

His friends knew him as “Woofa” but during his playing days his great pace led to a nickname of the Geelong Flier after the train that travelled from Melbourne to Geelong.

    Some of his favourite sayings:

    'Dead set fair dinkum unbeleivable'!

    'The Cricket Ground'.

    'The Grammar'.

One of the only times I found Sam Newman remotely funny was his gentle ribbibng of 'Bobby' as they clearly had rapport.

3 years ago when we were playing Geelong at the cattery (1st vs 2nd) . I was in the Pivotonians function room and as you could imagine filled with Geelong supporters.
I was one of the few brave enough to go in with a Dogs scarf, Bobby saw me from a distance and gae me a look that said "what the hell is that around your scarf?"
I just kissed my scarf and smiled back at him.

Great memories of watching Bob on the box growing up. What a character. This great game of ours does throw up some absolute gems.

RIP Bob Davis. Your cats did you proud tonight.

I remember on WOS bobby being asked to name names when describing a poor bears team. The other panelists threw him names and his responses were like.

I remember him criticising Geelong on League Teams one night and Lou Richards goading him into naming names. Bobby pulled the Footy record out of his pocket and gave a short critique of each player. He read down the list by numerical order and waved his hand in contempt as he did it, "rubbish" "cant kick" "should be playing in a country league somewhere".

IIRC he also said that Brad Hardie would never make it before the 1985 season and took a lot of stick when Hardie won the brownlow.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.
