Higgins to be a long-term Dog

Higgins to be a long-term Dog

    Andrea Petrie | August 19, 2009

ACCORDING to former Bulldogs recruiting manager Scott Clayton, the club's first choice in the 2005 draft was not just talented and versatile, but also ''dangerous'' and a potential star.

His name was Shaun Higgins, an 18-year-old from Geelong, whose natural abilities excited Clayton as much as his determination.

Clayton's only concern was that another club might snare Higgins ahead of the Dogs' 11th pick. They didn't and from the moment his name was read out, the lifetime Cats supporter - and his family - began supporting the red, white and blue.

But while Clayton was responsible for kick-starting Higgins' AFL career four years ago, the 21-year-old won't return the favour by heading north to play at the Gold Coast team for whom Clayton now recruits.

Instead, the exciting young midfielder-forward will re-sign with the club he hopes to remain at for the rest of his career. ''I'm not interested in leaving at all, so I'm looking forward to signing a new contract and hopefully being a Bulldogs player for the rest of my career,'' Higgins told The Age.

Said that the first game he played -- looked like a very young Cousins. Hopefully ends up with similar honours, minus the crap.

Agree, will never breathe easy until it's official.

However it is a great thing to read especially in light of Gold Coast's interest in him. Considering some of the other players we've picked around the same position in other drafts (ie, McMahon, Power, Everitt) he's been great value and should only get better injuries permitting.

I am so happy I am grinning. GRINNING, I TELL YOU.

My favourite part was: "Clayton was responsible for kick-starting Higgins' AFL career four years ago, the 21-year-old won't return the favour by heading north to play at the Gold Coast team".

    Future captain indeed!

    9 Dogs including Higgins re-sign

THE Western Bulldogs have moved to shore up their future by re-signing nine young players, including Shaun Higgins.

Along with 21-year-old midfielder-forward Higgins, the Bulldogs have secured Will Minson, Callan Ward, Tom Williams, Andrejs Everitt, Dylan Addison, Jarrad Grant, Jarrad Boumann and Easton Wood.

The club did not disclose the length of the new deals.

    Sensational news.

He will end up being one of the best players from the 2005 AFL draft.

Looking forward to him running around in a Doggies jumper for a long time.

It's a lot of faith shown in Boumann isn't it?

Just out of interest, why won't they name the length of their contracts?
