Re: AFL Game Day Round 6, 2019
It's uncanny how similar Melbourne and the Bulldogs are. Midfield is industrious get the ball inside 50 a lot but lack targets and pressure when it's in their and give up scores way to easily. Watching the first goal from Richmond is exactly how we give up a goal. A quick transition from defence, oodles of space and another easy goal given up.

Except Melbourne can find a target inside 50 and kick straight !

Melbourne tried to make McDonald into a key forward, but has moved him back tonight due to a lack of talls (injuries). Sound familiar

Melbourne are completely spooked. They have abandoned their entire game plan after 5 rounds and went with a completely different structure last night designed to slow the game right down, put extra numbers behind the ball and turn it into a low scoring scrap. And they still got hammered by 7 goals.
Goodwin has shown himself to be a one-trick pony - they'll finish bottom 4 this year.

What was he supposed to do?
They had a game-plan based around winning stoppages and contested ball ('cos, you know, their whole team is structured that way and that's what they did last year). They haven't been doing either so had to change it up.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

There's proactively changing it up, and then there's conceding the match before the ball is even bounced like they did last night. What they did last night was simply try to minimise the damage (by having multiple numbers behind the ball), which they failed to do in any event. I bet the heat map of possession would have been 95% in the back half last night, which simply plays the game to Richmond's strengths. It looked and felt like a bottom 4 team trying to stem the bleeding, rather than a proactive plan to beat the opposition (who are well below their best 22 due to injury).
