Re: Essendon
Growing up in the 80s and 90s as the Bomber juggernaut was growing and they were a dominant force winning Premierships, playing in Grand Finals and competitive every year (I do believe at one stage they were the biggest club in Melbourne, especially due to their early move to use the MCG as a home ground before Collingwood or Carlton) it was impossible to imagine a scenario where in a five year period the Dogs would make two Grand Finals and win a the flag and the Bombers would not win a final in 18 years! No even the Coodabeen Champions could have dreamed up that scenario .... and I am loving every single minute (maybe too much).

Equalisation really has been a God send for our club.
The wild 80s was just who could buy the premiership.
Essendon are the only team to have cheated in a premiership year.
Best part is they still carry on with the same hubris they had back then without any ability to act on it.
"In 1996, a joint investigation between the Australian Football League and the Australian Tax Office into Essendons finances found that the club had breached the salary cap by more than $514,000 between 1991 and 1996."

It’s no coincidence since the salary cap has been strictly enforced that Carlton and Essendon have been uncompetitive.

It's a point not lost on me. I've talked to supporters of both clubs who saw nothing wrong with being able to get players in and have a big part of their salaries subsidized. Most of them think you should be able to pay players whatever you like and to hell with the smaller clubs.

And University. The bastards.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Re: Essendon
If Clarkson ends up at Essendon how could the likes of Brereton ever interview him again?
It would make a mockery of the whole Hawks and Essendon hatred for each.

I don't see that as an issue for Clarkson. That was mostly about the 80's when Alistair was running around bashing anyone in his playing days with North and Melbourne

Surely he's used that as a coach to inspire his players?

They haven't needed much inspiration against Essendon for most of his time at Hawthorn.

If I was a Hawks player it would annoy me no end that a long standing coach went to the team they despise the most.

Is it even a thing any more?
Hawks and Geelong were bitter and more recent rivals, but nobody's flipping lids over Smith finishing his career at the latter.

Past players maybe, not current day players.
I've never liked Essendon and can't ever see that changing.
Supporters now go to the event, I pushed through freezing cold and waterlogged days at the footy years ago mainly for the rivalries.
