I can't believe we lost Ward for 30 K a year. He is exactly the type of player we need now. In hindsight, if he stayed and got a premiership in 2016, that would have been worth it.
Consistent stuff up to also lose Harbrow and some other players.

This sounds ominous though :
?All of a sudden GWS, whether his manager mentioned something to GWS, came over the top and blew everything out of the park
Is 30k enough for Cal to be pissed off enough to leave? Something doesn't add up here.

We offered 433k then added another 30k. GWS offered him $800k

Yeah, that's by point. No chance.
I hear the story is he would have stayed for 465k.
Seems odd on every level.
Don't doubt the Eade/BT story. I just find it all insane!
I guess the time between our initial offer and theirs may make it clearer to me. With Sheedy involved i think Cal was probably on the radar of GWS.
Crazy period.

Contract negotiations with the Bulldogs were fraught. The club preyed, in part, on his loyalty. But the offer over five years was scarcely half of the reported $4 million over five seasons Ward was offered to head north to join a club considered the AFL’s greatest gamble.
A car ride through Sydney with league legend Kevin Sheedy, who coached the inaugural Giants, helped to seal the deal as he considered his future in footy aged just 21.

They aren't the figures I heard.
Essentially if a revised offer had have been made within 4 or even 6 weeks he and his manager would have signed on quick smart.

According to this article they are:

Former Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade was furious that the club allowed Callan Ward to leave for GWS back in 2011.
Ward, who was 21 at the time, made the move to the AFL’s newest club on a five-year deal worth up to $4 million (or as much as $800,000 a year).
He was out of contract with the Bulldogs, who had reportedly offered him $1.3 million for three years (around $433k per year), and were ultimately unable to keep him at the Whitten Oval.

No, the first offer was way unders and the manger frustrated with the lack of a response from both Fantasia and Eade started testing the market. Had our revised offer come earlier then Ward would have signed.

My understanding was Sheedy was into him for a while, however you learned gents have made it pretty clear.

His dad was a mad Essendon supporter, so with our lack of urgency ol' Whiskey Nose would have gotten right into them.

Yeah it sucks, if it came down to us and GWS then he'd have probably ended up going with the one that offered more money but if we hadn't stuffed around to begin with then it probably wouldn't have even reached that stage.
