I think everyone sees it for what it is. A coach talking up his group in the pre-season and saying that we aren't going to settle for 2nd prize...it just feels like pretty empty rhetoric to be truthful.
Now, if El Presidente had come out and said "I have informed Ken and the Match Committee on behalf of the board that if our club is NOT playing on Grand Final day 2020, that they can all find themselves alternate employment...and they can take the players with them" then THAT would be something...and THAT would create pressure.
The coach saying it doesn't even raise an eyebrow does it?
I'm with you, I've taken little to nothing out of this article.
"We're going to start this year wanting to win the premiership in our 150th year.
"We're going to do everything we can to do that.
"To do that, you have to qualify for finals, so look out, we're coming."
Hardly inflammatory or controversial.

What every coach should be aspiring too, if not you wouldn’t have a job as a coach, what else is he going to say ?

I have deliberately gone out of my way to recruit the worst footballers that I could find because, lets face it I really, really hate this footy club and I don't want them to succeed at all Their toothless supporters give me the shits
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has it all to play for in 2020 and has learnt his fate ahead of time if he fails to succeed.
Hinkley took the reigns of the Power back in 2013 and has tallied a 77-60 win-loss record over his coaching career.

Despite the winning record, the Power have only played in the finals series in three of Hinkley’s seven seasons in charge with their last trip coming back in 2017.
Their best run came in Hinkley’s second season in charge when they came within three points of eventual premiers Hawthorn in the 2014 preliminary final.
But entering the 2020 season, Hinkley finds himself well and truly on the hot seat with club chairman David Koch applying the pressure.
‘‘I never talk contracts. He has publicly,” Koch said at the club’s sponsorship announcement.
“I think it was three-quarters of the way through last year, he said he’s got a trigger on his contract that he’s got to make the finals.
‘‘That’s not from me, that came from him.”
When probed on whether that meant it was finals or bust for Hinkley, Koch replied “yep”.
Hinkley has a clause in his contract that allows the 53-year-old to stay on as coach for 2021 provided the club achieves a top eight finish and features in September.
Despite the added pressure from the club’s brass, Hinkley isn’t backing down from expectations entering the season and even stated the current squad could go all the way.
“We’re going to start this year wanting to win the premiership in our 150th year,” he said.
“We’re going to do everything we can to do that. To do that, you have to qualify for finals, so look out, we’re coming.”

Port will need to win at least one final to regard the season as a successful one but I do admire how they have gone about it this year

Agree. Funny thing is they’d likely beat Brisbane in Adelaide, but likely will lose to either Geelong or the Tigers.

In some ways Hinkleys reign at Port has been similar to Bevos with us. Amazing success early but has fallen away a bit since and has faced criticism. If we make finals this year thats 4 out of 6 for Bevo which beats Hinkleys 3 out of 7. If we miss it’s 3 from 6 for Bevo.

They're in the same boat as us now and probably feeling more crappy.

They put it on the line and while they have come up short, they've had a great season though. Hinkley and the club should be commended for their season.
They have a bright future in front of them

The Port coaching team as a particularly strong one. I would imagine both Voss and Monty will be asked to interview for the North job.
I wonder if clubs will look at the way Port went about it this year and try and beef up the quality of their coach teams understanding that it will be a reduced number of coaches and within the footy department overall for next season at least. Versatile coaches might be a real consideration for clubs

Worth also noting that Port chose to take pay cuts across their coaching panel and kept everyone on rather than stand down a few.

Better to have some income than nothing at all.
