How's the battery life on the htc's?
Because it's rubbish on the iPhone.
Other than that, can't really complain.
Except that I keep getting my butt handed to me in "words with friends"

Really, it comes down to what you're looking for.

If you're not a tech-head and just want something mid-priced that works well, with a good interface, and high compatibility with your mates with a reasonably good fun factor you really just can't go past the iPhones -- I can't stand them personally but I like a lot of customisation. They do what they do very well.

Some of the Android phones are pretty good but the best ones are only available on Telstra, and you know how expensive those bastards are (and the extra coverage is unimportant unless you live in the country, work in a mine, or sleep in an elevator shaft).

Okay, my pick (still) for a sheer bang-for-buck smartphone, and I will be laughed down here by some, but I still can't go past the E71. I know it's 3 years old, doesn't have a touchscreen, and is not great for games, but if you like your QWERTY keyboards (which I do), use it for a few things here and there but not extensively, want super-speed (it's still one of the fastest processors around, and browsing on it is a joy), and are happy to keep your money in your pocket (there are deals out there for $19 plans INCLUDING data!) you just can't go past it.

Its build quality is also pretty fantastic, and it's a very professional, good-looking phone -- I mean, it's such a great design that the CURRENT version of it (the E72) is pretty much exactly the same with a better headphone jack and a couple of extra whistles. If you are happy to pay an extra $10 a month I think the E72 is available on $29 plans. Only thing is, the screen is pretty small.

Whatever you do, though, don't do the N8. Just don't do it. Nokia's E-series is brilliant (for what they are), their N-series is shite.

      In conclusion:

      FUN/MID-PRICED - iPhone
      UNIQUE/EXPENSIVE - HTCs
      PROFESSIONAL/BEST VALUE - E71/E72
      SHITE/AT ANY PRICE - N-series

Thanks for that, yeah I was sort of leaning away from the N8, I have an e63 at the moment which I like but I sort of want something new.

Im thinking a HTC but Im not really sure yet!

Fractionally worse on the HTC unfortunately. If a company can bring out a smartphone with a dramatically improved battery it'll be a hit.

Just on that Telstra have really come to the party recently on mobiles. $49 cap has 400 worth of calls and usually 1Gb data

I did not realise that if your hooked up with Telstra with your home phone you get $10.00 off Foxtel each month, sneaky p%$cks did not tell me until now!

                  +1

                  HTC Desire running android.

Very impressed. IMHO better than the iPhone but the iPhone is probably a better option for the less "techy" minded.

If you just want a smart-phone that gets the job get an iPhone.

If you want to tinker a little, customise and not be locked into Apple's world then the Android is for you.

                    +2.

The best smartphone performance wise out there in the Australian market currently is the Desire. I didn't know it had come down to $49 -- will check it out.

ps. And all those claiming it doesn't have enough 'apps' -- with a real and proper browser, you don't really need as many apps as the net does everything apps do anyway. Those claiming it doesn't have enough games as the iPhone, on the other hand, would be right.
