    Re: Champion Cavs

When i followed the NBA i was a Timberwolves follower, I was drawn to them for the similarities to the dogs. This was back when they drafted Christian Laetnerr and he was their great white hope in the early 90's.

Appears not much has changed for either team 20 odd years on....
More of an In Bruges guy?

        I hate Christian Laettner.

        Actually I don't, particularly after the 30 for 30. He's a pretty remarkable guy.

Michael Jordan for me, had his wings on the wall growing up but Kobe close in second. Named my first son Kobe Michael.
Only because Michael Kobe just didn't go.

I've been ploughing through the 30/30s the last few days. That one is on the flash drive waiting to be watched.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I was reading a bit on him last night and he wasn't popular. Are you able to expand on the 30 for 30 comment, as some say it made him more dislikble.

Did you not like him because of his on-court tactics?

He copped a lot of hate because he was the star white player of the all white super team, Duke. He was arrogant on court and opposition teams hated him, most famously Michigan. They viewed him as a spoiled rich white kid who was the antithesis of them. Their rivalry played out a bit like the class warfare in the US ie rich white minority vs poor black majority.

To top it off, Laettner was gifted the college player spot in the 92 Olympics to play for the dream team, a spot that many felt (including myself) should have gone to Shaquille O'Neil.

In the 30 for 30, you actually learn that Laettner is in fact from a hard working middle class family. He's definitely arrogant, but he's got a bit of a sense of humour about it all that I never thought he would have. But he also doesn't make any apologies for how he was in college. Everybody hated him for what he stood for, so his only choices were to own it or hide from it.

I'm not saying it's changed my opinion of him - it's just given me an appreciation that the situation was not as black and white (pun intended) as portrayed.

Luc Longley was there at the time as well.

I often forget he was a Wolf before a Bull. He was also a Sun and a Knick which people forget as well.
