Re: Early Trade Rumours 2023
This from Code Sports from Jon Ralph.
Nick Coffield (St Kilda)
Where is he going: Western Bulldogs. Before two injury-decimated years (an ACL, repeat calf tears) he hadn’t proved worthy of a top-10 pick but he was a very solid 15-possession-a game defender who in 2020 averaged an excellent 1.5 intercept marks and 5.1 intercept possessions. So it’s low investment, big upside for a player about to turn 24.
What does it mean: Another defensive magnet for Luke Beveridge to move around in the mix that includes Hayden Crozier, Jason Johannisen, Taylor Duryea, Bailey Dale, Ed Richards and wing/half back Oskar Baker.
James Harmes (Melbourne)
Where is he going: The Bulldogs have expressed an interest. He has two years on a deal worth nearly $500,000 so could they smooth it out over three seasons? His best is excellent. In 2021 he averaged 20 touches, 9.2 contested possessions, 3.2 clearances, 5.2 tackles.
What does it mean: Good luck Bailey Smith getting more midfield time. But the Dogs have to change up their mix and seem keen on small forward Nick Watson rather than a bona fide mid if they secure pick 4 from the Suns.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Geelong’s No.7 selection is viewed as gettable by rival clubs keen to move up the draft order, reports AFL Media.
With most recruiters believing there are around eight or nine top prospects in this year’s draft class the Cats’ sole selection of any value - they traded out their 2023 second, third and fourth-round picks last year - holds quite a lot of it.
Carlton, West Coast, Melbourne and North Melbourne are all among those believed to be interested in moving up the order, with the Cats a strong contender to trade backwards to acquire more picks.
Geelong list manager Andrew Mackie has said the club is open to “all opportunities”.
Gold Coast’s No.4 pick is also being eyed off by rival clubs with the Western Bulldogs believed to have the current best offer, with something like picks 10, 17 and their future first-rounder on the table.
A wantaway St Kilda defender’s exit could allow Ross Lyon’s club to unlock several moves after another was officially added to its to-do list on Sunday afternoon.
The Saints now have a week and a half to find the right price for both Fremantle wingman Liam Henry and Carlton midfielder Paddy Dow, after the latter lodged his trade request on the weekend.
They are also considering a move for Essendon midfielder Dylan Shiel, partially as part of Jade Gresham’s free agency exit, as taking on some of Shiel’s salary could entice the Bombers to pay more for Gresham - in turn ensuring St Kilda gets a first-round pick as compensation.
Finding a price for Henry loomed as a sticking point given the Dockers are ready to play hard-ball for the 2019 first-round pick and Academy product.
But the Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph reports the Saints will argue Henry’s value is close to that of Nick Coffield, the oft-injured 2017 top-10 pick who has asked for a move to the Western Bulldogs.
The Saints were initially hoping to land Henry for a third-round pick but could now try to on-trade the pick they get from the Bulldogs for Coffield.
The Bulldogs have picks 10, 17, 37, 64, 67 and 70.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Re: Early Trade Rumours 2023
Suns to trade pick four to Dogs
By Michael Gleeson
The Western Bulldogs are poised to finalise a deal to snare the Gold Coast’s sought-after pick four in this year’s national draft.
Under the deal which is likely to be completed today, the Dogs would give up picks 10 and 17 in this year’s draft and their future first round pick to the Suns.
In exchange Gold Coast would trade pick four plus two third-round selections this year and a third round next year.
The Western Bulldogs used pick four to snare Marcus Bontempelli in 2013.
A source with knowledge of the deal who did not wish to be identified while it was still being completed said the deal would be likely to be lodged today.
Gold Coast’s pick four has been keenly sought after by many clubs as the Suns have three elite academy players available to them in this year’s draft and in order to match bids that will come in the first round for those players they require a large number of ranking points.
Under the AFL’s counterintuitive system it is more valuable and attractive to require points to match bids for academy players to trade one highly prized pick for a handful of lower picks than it is to retain that pick. The Suns will earn more points from that deal than by holding on to pick four.
It is highly likely the Suns could then trade on the pick 10 they receive from the Bulldogs for more later draft picks and thus even more ranking points.Comment
