Re: Tribunal / suspensions 2024
Sure but I still don't like the idea of penalising someone for taking possession of the ball if they've got no real chance of disposing of it. The last thing I want to see is all players sweating on each other to pickup the ball so they can win a free kick.Comment

Re: Tribunal / suspensions 2024
The rule has always been that if you have one arm pinned and can't legally dispose of the football it's holding the ball. Really not sure what the issue is on that front, it's just that tackling technique is more sophisticated these days that it's happening more.
This is what I've always said about changing the rules around prior opportunity and tackling. When rules were originally devised tackling wasn't a skill in the same way it is today, and hasty changes will result in more confusion and possible issues.
And here we are......Comment

Re: Tribunal / suspensions 2024
If you want players to start tackling around the waist you need to wind back the interpretation that any lowering of the body shifts the onus of contact consequences from the tackler to the player with the ball.
Leading with the head should be a free against the ball carrier no matter what. Stamp that dangerous act out of the game, no worries. Easy to interpret like it had been for years.
A focus on going lower in the tackle will enable arms to raise above the tackle and free up disposal and head protection on the way to going to ground. It will also stop players maniacally going at an opponent at chest level where it's easier to lever them to the ground with a tackle and taking a more nuanced and targeted approach.
Both changes to the interpretations are relatively simple, meaning they won't be deployed.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

It's no surprise to me that recklessness and aggressiveness in tackling has escalated since the lowering the body rules were initiated a couple of years ago.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

Re: Tribunal / suspensions 2024
The game is now officially broken.
We hear it all the time in a hyperbolic, angry fans upset with the tribunal way, but I just don't see anything in the action from Cameron that is illegal, unduly rough play, or showing a lack of care. In no way does he deserve a penalty.Time and Tide Waits For No ManComment

The issue of concussion with litigation battles yet to be fought is going shift the way this game like never before.

Re: Tribunal / suspensions 2024
Is it broken or is it necessarily shifting to a more risk-adverse spectacle where player safety is now paramount? I think we need to shift our minds to the expectation that the AFEL want the game to continue moving to a high energy skills-based spectacle as opposed to a dour stoppage-heavy one. Clearly though, they want less injuries. Banning players for 3 weeks for a tackle sends a very clear message and is a better result for the AFEL than a 2-3 week concussion or a broken leg, snapped achilles, foot injury which actually keeps a player away from the game for far longer.
The AFEL is continually looking for ways to speed the game up or at least keep the game moving and inside the next 3 years I won't be surprised to see a rule introduced that awards a free kick for any tackle that is taken to the ground, dangerous or not. Not sure how this will look for tackling on the run but it's 100% coming.
We'll still see contest and body contact but if you get it the expectation will be to tackle upright enabling the game to keep moving while taking much of the vagaries of HTB umpiring decisions, and the risk of injury, out of the equation at the same time.
Footballers will continue to move further and further away from the Libba-types and more towards pure athletes. It's already happening. But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.Comment
