    Exactly!!!

Unfortunately the vast majority of the football media are way too brain dead to realise this.

As for the bemoaning about the fact that the priority pick has been scrapped just as the Dogs seem to be heading for a few years near the bottom of the ladder, remember that we do have the compensatory picks for Callan Ward and Sam Reid. These could be just as good as a priority selection depending on where we finish.

Our 3 prelims in a row would count as a finals appearance.

As the highlighted section was about premiership points i assumed you had a brain fade and confused it with premierships.
Ok I see. So just being in the finals series counts against you. I'm not sure if this is better or worse than ladder positioning.

        Re: AFL scraps priority pick

It's a good move to scrap the priority pick because it takes all the argument our of teams supposedly tanking games.
Leaving the criteria unclear for potentially allocating PP in the future is also a logical move because it would only start up the speculation again that some teams were positioning themselves for a priority pick.

Having priority picks for struggling sides was a good idea at the time but the combination of the ongoing media and public speculation that teams were tanking games and the fact that some teams did tank games wrecked it.

I think the right decision has been made to scrap it.

Sorry, but this is wholly untrue. Teams will still intentionally lose games to finish lower on the ladder because it still results in getting a lower pick, priority or not. The only way tanking can be somewhat subdued is if a lottery is instituted, and even if that system (one similar to the NBA's, for the example's sake) is put in place, that still favours the lower-finishing team and thus partly advocates tanking.

It's always going to be a thing.

There is no reason for priority picks - period. Should simply scrap them completely.

Tanking would be a non-issue immediately, the difference between pick 1 and pick 2 or pick 3 and pick 5 is negligible at best.

            Watts, Natanui, Hill, Rich...whatever.

Every year recruiters disagree on who the top picks should be anyway.

I agree. It's when you get picks 1 AND 2 that the issues come. Sure, you might get one or two teams at the bottom of the ladder try to deliberately drop a game in Round 22 to ensure they get first pick at a particular young talent sure to go Number 1, but that's hardly systematic tanking like we've seen in recent years. It's the fact it's an extra pick that makes it unfair and open to cheating.

I agree. The incentive to compromise results was just too great and now there will be just a flop of draft picks which is hardly an incentive.

Not sure if it has already been mentioned, scrapping the priority pick enables us to have an earlier pick for the Ward compensation, which can only be a good thing (especially if we finish in the bottom 4)

I noticed an article on this issue made mention of us and our compensation pick, with the suggestion if we're doing poorly we'll tank because there is a big benefit in it. As I understand, we'll need to active the pick shortly if we intend to use it in the 2012 ND.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

                            Nail, hammer, head.

IIRC it has to be before the season. Again, the incentive to lose goes bye-bye. Chalk it up to more poor research from the illustrious journalism fraternity.

We new this was coming. I don't think they should get a PP, they have had a number of No. one picks, plus the tanking issue and they have still made a mess of it. I don't believe their list is as bad as they make out with Hogan coming on board next year, plus the players they recruited in the last few seasons now starting to get some AFL experience.

I don't think they deserve one either but I reckon the AFL will give them one. Just depends if it is at the end of the first round or before....which would be disgusting.
