    1909 Grand Final

Thought some of you would like to see a clip of the 1909 GF.

    Link here

Moving image coverage of the 1909 VFL Grand Final, the earliest known surviving film of Australian Rules football action. In 2009, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this precious sporting film, the NFSA produced this new digital video master from 35mm film.

Played on Saturday 2 October 1909, Carlton and South Melbourne fought out a tough, low scoring contest at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. South Melbourne, chasing their first premiership in the Victorian Football League (VFL), held off a desperate Carlton, looking to win their fourth consecutive flag. In front of more than 37,000 fans, despite being held goalless in the last quarter, The Bloods triumphed by two points. South Melbourne 4 14 38, Carlton 4 12 36.

Is it tracic that I knew the teams, the scores and the fact that Charlie Ricketts coached South and Jack Worral coached Carlton without having to check first?
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Love it that some South players have their sash going the other way and some Carlton players are wearing different jumpers altogether!

Couldn't imagine to many reports in those days.
              Great piece of history.

Did I see them throwing the ball? When did the hand pass come in?

They are flick passes. Pretty much a throw by definition. You hold the ball in the palm of one hand and hit it with the open hand. To answer your question they bought in the current handball in 1925 but Footscray were still using the flick pass as late as 1961.

I havent watched this footage for a while but dont they sort of throw the ball up in th air and punch it to teammates as well?

*edit* A Carlton player does it at 4.08.

Teddy was an expert at the flick pass. Thanks for that Carl.

I love the history of football, but hate the changes made in the last 20 odd years.

Thanks for putting the footage up. I meant to do a few things this morning but I started watching youtube clips and now all of a sudden it's past midday! Still I've seen the 1911 Tasmanian grand final, Victor Trumper getting run out against South Africa and lots of World Of Sport!

Nobody seems to have bitten at this TD.

                        Yes. Yes it is .

It's now 1.30 pm and I've been watching bad cops, Messi running around the entire Arsenal team, Pepe getting sent off for (not really) kicking Messi, Ron James plying for Willy.

                            I. Really. Have. To. Switch. The. Computer. Off!
