    Vale Peter Box

    Vale Peter Box

The Western Bulldogs are today mourning the passing of premiership player and Brownlow medallist, Peter Box.

Box, 86, died surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday.

Box played 107 games over six seasons between 1951 and 1957, missing the 1952 season after a serious motorcycle accident, and remains the only Bulldog to win a premiership, Brownlow Medal and a Best and Fairest.

“Peter’s career was relatively short in duration but his impact on our Club was significant,” Cub President Peter Gordon said.

“He wasn’t tall but held down the centre half-forward position in the 1954 premiership team with distinction, and within two years was a Brownlow Medallist.”

Recruited from Cheltenham, Box impressed early in his career winning Footscray’s Most Consistent and Best First Year Player award in 1952, before being awarded the Brownlow in 1956.

Box was inducted into the Western Bulldogs Hall of Fame in March, 2018.

The only Brownlow medal winning premiership playing bulldog ever.

Condolences to the Box family. Peter Box was a gun.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

My thoughts are with his family and friends. I'm from a later generation so was before my time but from what i've heard he is definitely a Bulldog champion.

          RIP Peter Box.

Wake me up when we get to heaven, let me sleep if we're going to hell

Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath

                    Vale.

I used to play tennis against him in a Sunday social competition. Gruff man, still an excellent player in his 60s.

                    Condolences to family and friends.

A fine final farewell Service for Peter Box , held today, with his two sisters, son and other family members in attendance Great to see some of his former team mates in Jim Gallagher Angus Abbey Lionel Ryan and John Westacott together with fellow Brownlow Medalist John Schultz, They all spoke in awe of Box’s brilliance, winning the B &F in 1955 and the Brownlow in 1956 defeating second placed Peter Pianto by 6 votes. Box had a great relationship with Coach Charlie Sutton who was able to get the absolute best out of his Champion.
Whilst generally known as a loner, Box also had a close friendship with ‘54 Premiership Vice Captain Wally Donald.
Vale Peter Box a true Champion of our Club.
