Surely if the umpire calls play on then he can leave the goal square. If the forward is allowed into the goal square to tackle then it stands to reason the defender should be able to leave it? Otherwise it's like saying play on to you 35 players but you in the goal square it's still a set kick. Doesn't make sense.
It makes no sense but that's the rule. Even if the umpire calls play on from a kickout the player still has to touch the ball to his boot before he leaves the square.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Ran into Fletcher Roberts at the Willy canteen and asked him how he's progressing. Back at Footscray for 3 quarters next week and should be available for senior selection after that or in his words 'if there's a spot for me!'.
Humble guy.

Humble guy.
He ran 9km on Saturday morning and will be available for VFL selection if he gets through the sessions this week. 80% playing time is the aim.

Re: Footscray Bulldogs v Williamstown - Round 17 2015
Certainly a game we were ever really in control of, save for a chunk of the third quarter where we kicked away just enough to hold off Willy.
A few notes:
Bloody good win considering the conditions, the pressure from Willy and the lopsided umpiring. Tough to grind out a win a Burbank Oval, so a good sign for our youngsters.
Boyd worked hard, with Willy specifically leaving 2 men on him during the game. 3 goals, including one in the last that effectively sealed the game where he showed good agility for a big man, dodging a couple and snapping it through. Also missed a few he should have kicked. Overall, happy with the performance. Without him, we lose.
Zaine was also good. He lost one contest that I can remember but apart from that, pretty rock solid. He loves a big spoil. Kicked a nice, low drop punt into the wind for a goal. Gonna be a gun.
Hrovat was busy but as always, gets himself in knots before releasing the ball. Kicked a beautiful goal in the third where he took possession, ran away from congestion and dobbed it from 40 from around his body.
Kelly impressed again with his sure hands and good decision making. I can see Bevo using him in a similar role to Prudden, but Kelly has a touch more size & athleticism about him. Not sure if he'll make it but I'm hopeful.
Minno really wasn't a factor today. Seemed to misread the ball in ruck contests and got outdone by Willy's Meeson. Ayce was the far better ruck man for us, and was a lot more influential around the ground, taking a few big contested marks in the last that helped us get out of defence when Willy were pushing. Happy to stick to my guns and say we should keep Ayce and move Minno on
Honey kicked a really nice snap in the first quarter but had a shocking case of the fumbles, including a shocker in front of where I was sitting. Took a few bounces, dropped the ball between his legs, went back to get it, fell over himself and his opponent ran off with the pill. I like his intensity but I have my doubts he'll ever have the class to truly be a quality AFL player.
Darcy Macpherson is easy to pick out there with his shock of white hair. Didn't look out of place, was clean and did a few nice things including a blind turn out of traffic that had a few Doggies fans smiling. Also kicked a gem on a tough angle that put us back in front. Probably competing directly with a Honeychurch type on our list and from today's small sample, looks like he might have the edge in class.
Webb was relatively quiet but used the ball well when he had it. Still has plenty to work on and got lost in transition a few times, leading to his direct opponent either getting out on the lead, or getting over the back. A gun in the making, though.
Hamilton was creative and ultra clean in the conditions, but is so 'assist-minded' he actually does the team a disservice by handing off possession he should be converting himself. Competed well in the air. Again, plenty he has to work on but also plenty to work with.
My bests were Boyd, A. Cordy, Z.Cordy, Hrovat, Kelly.

Comrade's comprehensive report has saved me a bit of typing.
Just some quick notes
Kelly has really improved over the last few weeks and I think it would be a difficult decision to drop him off the list.
Ayce was solid contributor for the game and like Kelly it's going to be a tough list management decision to drop him
Honeychurch is off the mark at the moment. I'd find it hard to suggest him for a promotion and Hrovat would be a couple of steps ahead.
Zainiac is composed and a good decision maker. Give him time.

The Footscray Bulldogs are back in the top four of the VFL ladder after defeating traditional rivals Williamstown by 11-points in a thrilling contest on Sunday afternoon.
With the reigning premiers fresh off an impressive win over the Bombers and travelling to Burbank Oval to tackle the ladder leading Seagulls, it was a game that promised plenty and delivered in spades.
Williamstown came into the match the winner of five straight games, the most recent a five goal drubbing of the in-form Magpies, and the Dogs were going to have to get their hands on the footy early and often to come away with the points in the tough conditions.
Coach Ashley Hansen challenged his midfield brigade before the game to take it up to experienced Seagull mids, and it was in the engine room where the game was won.
“They were just outstanding today, that group. I set them the challenge to really take it up to Willy’s midfield because they’re such an experienced and successful group,” he said
“They’ve played together for a long time but our boys got it done, and it was a nice blend of Kelly, Pearce, Hrovat, Prismall, Goodes and Honeychurch. They shared the load and set us up for the win.”
Tom Boyd was again impressive despite competing against two and sometimes three opponents at once; the big man finishing with a tally of three goals but could just as easily have kicked five or six.
Hansen said that the 19-year-old was a key player in the latter stages of the contest despite the extra attention.
“He’s putting himself in a position where he’s competing really hard even when he’s outnumbered. We certainly didn’t help him - our other forwards needed to try and engage their spare and make them accountable, but that’s something we will work on.”
“But that said I thought he was really threatening early and certainly pivotal late in providing a contest and a target when we went forward.”
The Seagulls were just 16 points back at the final change after leading at the half and got within 10 points midway through the final term but Hansen said that his team took a step forward in being able to hold off a team off Williamstown’s standard on their home deck.
“The belief the group displayed in holding off an experienced team in the last quarter was really pleasing to see,” he said.
“To be under that level of pressure where they’ve got to not only defend a lead but then also deal with a really combative senior side that is on top of the ladder … I thought it was a really important win for the development of our young side.”
Another positive was the form of father-son prospect Darcy Macpherson in his first VFL game. The son of Stephen Macpherson, who played 188 games for the club between 1982-1995 kicked a goal and looked more than comfortable in the red, white and blue.
“Darcy walked into an absolute furnace of a game in regards to the competitive nature of it and I thought he held up really well,” Hansen said.
“He didn’t shirk a contest and I thought he was clean with his use and made some really good decisions. I thought he showed some really good signs for his first game.”
Footscray will take on Port Melbourne at Victoria University Whitten Oval next Saturday at 2:00pm.
