    South Australian Junior Football

Whats happened to junior football in SA?

They're consistently a very strong team in the National championships however just 6 players were drafted this year and just two of those players were selected in the top 40

The following players will now be hoping to get a lifeline via either the PSD or on a rookie list.
Jonty Scharenberg was rated highly last year and was not even selected late in the draft
Tyson Stengle looked good in the championship but was also not selected
Steven Slimming, Ben Jarmam, Sam Walker, Kym LeBois Peter Ladhams, Jake Pitman and Mitchell Hinge all missed out.

Even mature aged players from the SANFL were overlooked.

I'd be interested in hearing thoughts on why we have a strong state team but AFL during the National Championships but AFL clubs aren't rating enough of their players?

In Caleb Daniel's year they won the champs and their best 4 players were Jake Johansen, Caleb Daniel, Sam Durdin & Declan Hamilton. The first two were considered too short for AFL, though Caleb has turned that on its head which makes me wonder what Johansen is doing these days

Not sure it's a long term problem. Last year we could've written the same about WA, who had 1 top 30 pick compared to SA's 5.

A few of those are mature-agers though - and not all South Australians.

What's happening in Tasmania is of greater concern. They can't get a player drafted at all.

Football is in a shambles and was poorly led by Scott Wade for an eternity and didn't seem to be accountable to anyone. No wonder the AFL doesn't take them seriously about having their own AFL team down there.

Maybe for a tread on it's own but could the AFL's lack of interest in Tasmania pushed development backwards. So many great players in the past have come from there. I read an article recently that kids are going from footy to other interests. Maybe the AFL should have spent money there instead of western Sydney to invigorate the competition.

They have something like 8 games a year in Tasmania and to be honest the crowd numbers arent fantastic.

If you lived if Tassie would you go just because the Hawks or Roos were playing? I know I probably wouldn't bother unless the Dogs were there.

As a long term Tas resident, I have only attended Bulldog games in Tassie.

I think the issue really rests on development. They have played around with the leagues for the past 30 years and every change has seen a weakening of the standard.

The other thing that has occurred is that we now do not have the retiring top level coming back to Tasmania to play and coach.

Players of the standard of Rhys-Jones, Mark Browning, Peter German etc who had long careers at the top level, helped maintain a standard in Tasmania. Now we get lower tier players taking those roles and as a consequence we have a lower standard of competition.

It seems Graham Cornes had noticed too, but in his standard deluded conspiracy theory manner, blames it on Victorian AFL clubs collaborating to justify the TAC Cup.

He certainly puts the small in Adelaide small world chip on your shoulder.

                          Good old Cornsey. Never change.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

There is something on AFL.com.au that shows where this years players were drafted from.

3 from SA, 3 from NT, 12 from WA, 6 from QLD, 9 from NSW/ACT, 44 from VIC and none from TAS
I actually think 4 players from SA got drafted

As Doc pointed out, there needs to be some serious investment in Tas because players should be be drafted from there. They need to start the Mariners team again or have players aligned to Victorian clubs.

Why SA has failed so poorly this year just doesn't make sense. They field competitive teams in the National Carnival and yet even with 10 players getting National Combine invitations they've come up short during the draft.

There's often been whispers from AFL recruiters and player managers that SA u18 Coach Brenton Phillips coaches more for wins then he does to develop players. Recruiters would like to see players try different positions rather than stuck forwards/back etc.

Jake Johansen has been playing good SANFL footy with Glenelg the last 2 seasons (me and my mates where his player sponsors) but supposedly for a variety of reasons that i wont go into on here, he wont be at Glenelg next season. Allegedly he may have had some very poor advice from his Manager over the last 3 seasons, which has cost him any chance of playing AFL.
