One day I remember our talls were Jim McAllister (FB), Terry De Koning (CHB), Ross Christensen (CHF), Shane Loveless (FF) and Bill Berry (Ruck). My father said it was the worst spine ever to wear the colours. We got beat by 129 points that day.

I had a soft spot for him though, he had a go and was no worse than Mark Komp, his main competitor for a key defensive post.

I'd love to see Tom get a crack if Dal thinks he's good enough.

Not bitter, but ordinary memories . Terry was god awful as a player . He ended up at Camberwell in the vfa , from memory . Kompy was awfully slow and couldn’t kick, but a great bloke by all accounts . I think his father was a karate teacher who had a school in Footscray .

West Footscray in Barkly st. It only closed a couple of years ago.

Komp was the worst kick I ever saw but he was the fullback so he kicked the ball in after a behind! He taught my kids at school. I spent many parent teacher nights talking footy with him. He is a good bloke.

I remember watching the Roys v Dogs at Junction Oval on The Winners one weekend, which was surprising in itself as we were so rarely featured on TV in the early 80's. Doug Heywood was commentating the match, and after a typical Mark Komp floater that went out on the full he said ......"Mark Komp, kicks it like he normally does, very poorly"

But the full back kicked out and that was that. The fact the full back patently couldn't kick and everybody had to move 20 metres forward to have any chance of competing for the ball never entered into the equation. Instead of finding somebody actually capable of carrying out the job properly we all just got on with it, the way it had been done since 1897.

It wasn't even a tradition that we clung to stubbornly either. I don't think it ever occurred to us to do it differently. I wonder who was the first person who thought "hang on?"

He was a tennis champion as well.

The old boundary umpire Ian somebody, all he ever did was piss and moan about modern day football and how the umpiring was too weak and how Norm Smith wouldn't have done such and such. Geez he was rubbish. But most of the ABC panel was rubbish (just a bunch of old blokes whining about how much better everything was in the old days with Drew Morphett trying to drag them into the 20th century.) it was fun to watch but you didn't really learn anything about football.

I guess it was aimed at that generation who grew up during the war and depression and just wanted everything to stay the same. Can't blame them for wanting that really. Their lives had already been interesting (in the chinese sense of the word) enough as it was.

The Ian was Ian Cleland, TD. Yes, he was a whiny, old bore when it came to football. But, apart from being an ex-umpire, he was also a very good lawn bowler. I used to enjoy his bowls commentary on Jack High - there, he was very entertaining and knowledgable. As a bowler myself, I remember him playing at our club once and making a speech. Seemed like a decent fellow away from the footy commentary.

Ian bloody Cleland with the perpetual scowl! And for some bizarre reason he wasn't even the play by play caller but the special comments guy. Which wouldn't have been so bad except his idea of special comments was yelling "hopeless!" after every contest without ever pointing out what he thought was hopeless. "What did you think there, former VFL boundary umpire Ian Cleland" "oh hopeless Doug" "thanks Ian". God i loved 'em!

I was explaining to my son the other day about the dearth of televised sport when I was his age. Tuesday night was escort cup. There was a 90 minute highlight package on two and Seven (but run at the same time) on Saturday night. Some years we'd get MOTD from England in the summer. Ashes tests from England were a rare treat-Ian Botham completely ruined my HSC. Wimbledon.

And that was pretty much it apart from the real prime time sports, lawn bowls and snooker.

OT but you forgot one major sport in Melbourne:

                            Don't piss off old people
The older we get the less "LIFE IN PRISON" is a deterrent...

Clark Hansen and Smooth Booth were excellent commentators on The Winners, as was Tim Lane. Clelo was awful and Geoff Leek hated commentating any games that didn't involve his beloved Bombers. I really enjoyed Doug Heywood as a commentator - love the way he would use a players full name when commentating (Douglas Barwick, Terence Daniher, Nicholas Winmar). He even called Val Perovic 'The Gypsy' in one game.
