    ESSENDON
In a strong position to take the best available talent after an excellent draft haul last year adding Archie Perkins, Nick Cox and Zach Reid, as well as former St Kilda speedster Nick Hind in exchange for a bargain-basement late pick. Slick Western Jets’ halfback Cody Raak, who is tied to the Western Bulldogs through the next generation academy program, could be a nice fit. A developing ruck such as Oakleigh’s Ned Moyle or Calder’s Liam Podhajski may appeal as a long-term play or former Geelong key defender Blake Schlensog to help support an injury-hit backline missing Michael Hurley. The Bombers could go a few different ways. Couldn’t rule out a strong ball winner either as the Bombers rank 16th for contested possession differential this season.

Why are they in a strong position to take best available? Wouldn't that privilege go to North?

The best available talent at their pick I think it means. As in they don't have a pressing position to fill.

That makes sense. I was clouded by the typical pro-essendon HS in thinking they meant Essendon had best dibs on the best talent. Still wouldn't have used the word 'strong'. It's just the position they might be in.

Actually I think it means that have a lot of positions that need filling.

What I (well the HUN) mean is they don't specifically need to get a ruckman or a KPD for example to play AFL this year because of a glut of injuries in 1 position. They will probably just take someone they consider a strong prospect to take a look at in their program.

Ambrose is 29 so they may have some sort of succession plan thing going on.

I liked Raak and thought we should take him as a Cat B rookie but good luck to the kid. I still like to see ex-Jets boys do well.

Kicked 6 goals in the VFL on the weekend, not sure if he's being reinvented as a forward?

North bound? Likely No.1 pick finally enters Mid-Season Draft

GUN TALL Jacob Edwards will on Monday nominate for the NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft, paving the way for him to head to North Melbourne as the likely No.1 pick.

The 202cm Sandringham Dragons prospect has been weighing up whether to put his hand up for the mid-year intake or wait until the end-of-season national draft, where he would likely have been a top-10 pick.

Edwards has also been in discussions with clubs about how he would juggle his final months of schooling – he is finishing year 12 this year – if he was selected mid-season.

However he will nominate on Monday ahead of Tuesday's deadline for potential pick-ups to officially register with the AFL. Edwards will nominate under an 18-month term – meaning the club that selects him must keep him listed for at least that long – with the ability to extend his deal once he gets to his drafted club.

Edwards, who was overlooked at last year's national draft, burst onto the scene early this season with a series if eye-catching games for the Dragons playing as a ruck/forward. He has been the standout player to emerge for the mid-season pool, with his height, foot skills and goal nous among his standout qualities.

He turns 19 in November so is not viewed as a short-term addition for clubs but a long-term prospect.

The Kangaroos are in pole position to take Edwards on June 2, with the 18th-placed Roos a win and nearly 20 per cent behind the 17th-placed Hawthorn on the ladder.

Fellow big man Ned Moyle, who rucked against Edwards earlier this season for the Oakleigh Chargers, will also lodge his nomination on Monday. The 205cm ruckman has also impressed at VFL level with Collingwood in recent weeks and shapes as a likely early pick in the mid-season draft, with the Hawks and Magpies linked as suitors.

                          AFL mid-season draft nominees

The mid-season draft’s reputation as a home for second-chance heroes will continue next Wednesday with Tyson Stengle set to be selected exactly 77 days after being sacked by Adelaide.

Collingwood is believed to have interviewed Stengle for the second time on Tuesday as the Pies close in on the sparkling small forward.

The AFL’s deadline for nominations closed at 5pm on Tuesday with Stengle among the list of players that includes exciting NAB League ruckmen Jacob Edwards and Ned Moyle.

Moyle and Edwards are set to be chosen with only nine total NAB League games between them after their 2020 seasons were ruined by COVID.

Sandringham Dragon Edwards is expected to head to North Melbourne with the first pick in the virtual draft as a 202cm ruckman, while Oakleigh Chargers ruckman Moyle also has suitors including Hawthorn, Collingwood and Gold Coast.

Moyle has played VFL football with Collingwood in recent weeks in the NAB League hiatus.

Rivals believe Carlton, now with two selections after David Cuningham’s ACL tear, are looking at Old Ivanhoe ruck Alex Mirkov after he played two VFL games with the club’s VFL side.

Essendon has also been linked to Eastern Ranges small forward Corey Preston, who played last weekend with the Footscray VFL side.

Stengle’s career looked all but over when he was sacked on March 17 by Adelaide for a series of blunders including a drink-driving incident and being caught by police with cocaine.

But he is seen as the best small forward available in the draft after a series of strong performances for Woodville West-Torrens.

Collingwood has the third overall pick but could fall to second or rise to fourth, with Stengle the perfect fit for their current needs.

Norwood 18-year-old Jackson Callow thrust his name forward as a mid-season contender by kicking 3.7 in the SANFL against Adelaide’s reserves side on Saturday, taking seven contested marks.

Other contenders include Wylie Buzza, Patrick McCartin, Ben Crocker and Patrick McCartin.

AFL clubs have until the close of business next Tuesday to decide upon whether they clear list spots to take a selection. It means Richmond will have to make a decision on whether to place ruckman Ivan Soldo on the long-term injury list to secure a pick.

Brisbane can do likewise with Cam Rayner (ACL), with football boss Danny Daly telling the Herald Sun the Lions were likely to take a selection.

Greater Western Sydney has a selection but is still tossing up whether to invest $50,000 into a player it will sign for six months.

The AFL did not conduct a mid-season draft for COVID reasons but in 2019 it attracted a diverse range of players including that year’s premiership hero Marlion Pickett.

Will Snelling was chosen by Essendon only after Sydney shocked the Dons by taking their target three picks before them with the No. 4 pick.

Snelling was a tackling dynamo in the SANFL but continues to improve and against North Melbourne on Sunday was awarded coaches votes for his 25-possession, eight score involvement display.

Of the 13 players taken in the 2019 mid-season draft Ryan Gardner (pick 6), Snelling (pick 7), Marlion Pickett (pick 13) and John Noble (pick 14) are all first-choice members of their current sides.

Selfishly, I hope they leave Robbie well alone. He's a huge part of our VFL midfield.
