If he goes down or for some reason his form drops off badly we'll be looking to Sweet to step up big time. Can he do it?
I doubt we will want Martin to play 22 H&A games. He will be managed throughout the season and he will support the younger rucks at training and mentoring. Let's hope he is cherry rip towards finals time.

Fingers crossed Sweet is up top it.

I wonder if we are looking at any mature rucks form the lower leagues to draft? Maybe SA or WA?

Steph was brought into the prelim out of desperation as Young was poor in the semi v Brisbane.

I am guessing Bevo wants a Gawn, or Grundy type (so do all clubs), and is not prepared to accept just any old lumbering ruckman into the team. Can you imagine how good we would be with one of those two in our team.
I think the real issue is that Bevo wants NicNat for the actual ruck contests and peak Ben Hudson for the ground scrap after the ruck, but also needs that player to be Marcus Bontempelli when the ball leaves the ruck area.

He would probably also like that person to become Gary Dempsey when we are are in defensive 50 and Bernie Quinlan in forward 50.

If he can't have anyone to do all that he will just pretend a ruck isn't needed.

I do wonder if there were politics at play here. We weren't playing Martin in the last rounds even though he was declared fit, preferring to use Young (maybe under the guise of flexibility - Keath is injured, Bruce is gone for the season, we may need to use another backman/forward; we will bring in Young who can pinch-hit but go back or forward if needed).

This is all speculation (obviously) ... but I still believe the fact that Martin has not had the fanfare the other re-signs have had post-season, leads me to think it is yet to happen and there is still a lot to play out here.

I think we might need the list spot so that we can use the 5 draft picks with points attached for Darcy (we currently have 4 list vacancies). So delist Martin and redraft to the rookie list potentially.

I think this is a valid approach. Gives back up to our two main ruckman. But should we be able to pick one up on the cheap; maybe someone who is big bodied and played state level, not AFL, then don't rookie him, add him to the coaching ranks.

Sam Power after the trade period paraphrased - we feel the time is right for Sweet to take on more responsibility in the ruck, with Stefan Martin and Tim English.......

So would suggest terms are just being agreed and an announcement should come out soon.
              TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

I agree Jee … I do wonder though if he will remain on the main list or move to the rookie list

that player does exist and his NicNat but you will never get more than 10 games from him as his body is just run ragged and broken down now.

Bevo is dreaming that he can get a ruckman that can play like a midfielder. Only a handful of Rucks have durability and kinda play a bit like a mid: Dean Cox, Gawn ( taken him awhile), maybe Grundy, NicNat (can't stay on the park) and Josh Fraser ( then he just feel off a cliff) and to some degree Goldstein.

Give up the idea Bevo, its simple genetics. People that tall cannot be that atheletic for long periods of time and run long distances in AFL. If they are they are rare.

Maybe he can draft Cripp's brother , who is a big body mid who plays in the ruck

Its a very simple formula, get a good ruckman who can win the stoppages and feed the mids the ball. Nankervis is a classic ruckman, who can run all day.

Spotted a ripping story on BF from poster Kony Abbott, dunno if it is true:

I was told some insider goss on Dodoro a couple of months that may be of interest.

Apparently during trade week there is some sort of online portal that both teams submit their trades through which goes to the AFL, someone checks it to make sure both clubs have entered the same thing and then the AFL announces it. However because the portal is quite slow, when deals are done in the last hour someone from one of the clubs will just shoot the AFL an email and they make it official.

When Essendon and GWS were trading for Jye Caldwell at the end of 2020, the above process unfolded and Essendon sent through the email to the AFL which they then announced. The only problem was that Essendon entered in the deal that they wanted, not the deal GWS agreed to. GWS only found out when the AFL posted it on social media, I don't know what the exact trade ended up being but say it was Caldwell and X for X and a future 2nd, it was meant to be Caldwell and X for X and a future 1st or something.

GWS were absolutely livid, there was a 6 hour mediation session a week later and the result was the AFL just conceded they couldn't do anything about it and would make sure it couldn't happen again, McCartney told Essendon he'll never trade them another player. Looks like he was true to his word with Hill this year.

If that were true no one would ever trade with the Dons again surely.
It adds to the pantomime villany of the Dodo character though

The AEFL should have nulled the trade. Would have totally screwed up Essendon. Beggers belief that do not have a tool that works properly so both parties can submit their trades, and its actually recorded and confirmed both parties have entered the same terms.

But not surprised by Ess trying these tactics. My cynicism on them keeps growing each time with these type of stories.

Why would anyone want to trade with them?

I'm still stunned that anyone wants to go to that joke of a club. GWS have saved Bobby Hill from himself, he's lucky they had a contract to hold over his head to prevent him following through on his brain fart.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Jarrod Brander has attracted the curiosity of clubs in the countdown to next month’s rookie draft.

Brander was put up for trade by West Coast, but failed to find a new home during the exchange window and was subsequently delisted by the Eagles.

A handful of clubs have enquired about the 195cm Victorian utility, who failed to secure a spot with the Eagles after being taken with pick 13 in the 2017 national draft.

GWS is understood to be one of the clubs considering Brander, among others, after a trade period in which they missed out on Rory Lobb and Luke Breust.

The Giants are keen to secure a bargain buy, with a host of names liked to the club.

Michael Gibbons, Jay Lockhart and Ben Cavarra are also understood to be options for Leon Cameron’s squad.
