Why Dogs must look at Ladhams

If Stef Martin were 26, the Dogs could afford to go into 2022 with the Tim English-Martin ruck set-up once more.

But Martin’s body cannot be trusted given he turns 35 in November and English went backwards this year.

Port Adelaide’s Peter Ladhams has to be a consideration for the Dogs given they are keen for ruck cover and at only 23 he has significant upside as a ruck-forward.

Trade talk at this time of year is mostly 2 + 2 = 5

I'll wait for Sammy Power's hangover to fade before I believe much of what is written.

I was reading somewhere last night, Ladhams contract is heavily back ended, so he could come cheaper than expected if the new club takes on the full contract dollars.

We have some room in our cap if Sam Power wanted him, could be a good value trade potentially.

Is Ladhams a capable #1 ruck? I personally do not see it.

I'm not sure he is even an upgrade on English.

I think he is worth looking at in the unlikely event English moves on, they are both similar in that they aren't really first rucks and are kind of decent high half forwards. English is better at that, Ladhams I suspect is marginally better in the ruck. I think he is a good option if we lose English and want a second ruck that we can play.

If English is a better high half forward than Ladhams, he must really be rubbish because English has dominated maybe twice in his entire career up forward. And we all know English's limitations as primary ruck. It is not an age/upside thing either - he is 4 years older than Jackson, and the difference between the 2 couldn't be starker after the weekend.

I would not be unhappy at all with a Ladhams in and English out scenario with a far stronger draft hand as a result. Tim is a player without a position currently - he is like all the English (no pun intended) all-rounders who came in after Botham but couldn't hold their place in either batting or bowling. His trade currency will never be higher that it is right now. I'd rather invest in players who have inherent competitiveness to win one-on-one contests - this cannot be taught and Tim just doesn't have that absolute ruthlessness in his make-up.

In fairness, Jackson is a pick and is the best forward/ruck in the competition.
English hasn't come on as we'd like (and I don;t think he's a ruck) but at the very least the days of begging a cooked Cloke to play for us are over.

I'm thinking if English wants to go home maybe it is time to trade him though. Dunkley was a different kettle of fish - he's a natural competitor, English is highly skilled and super tall but has a bit of the Schaches about him and for his good work this year, I'm still not banking on Schache as a week in , week out proposition either.

In an ideal world we'd get a Max Lynch (or Ladhams if we clear his off-field stuff) type and a Ceglar stop gap/security blanket.

Yeah I'm all for moving on English - the time is right.

His lack of intensity simply won't improve. He's a TERRIBLE ruck and his forward craft is hardly any better, save for a couple of games/moments.

If we could turn English into 2 rucks (i.e. Ceglar + Ladhams or Ceglar + Lobb) and possibly another draft pick or KPD, do it.

Jackson is the best forward/ruck in the comp only in hindsight - he was considered a reach pick by the Dees (as was Oliver, so massive thumbs up to Dees recruiters). The fact is Jackson can do both things competently because a) he is super talented and b) he is an inherently competitive bugger. English doesn't lack for talent but he is light years behind in terms of absolute competitiveness. What will Jackson be like in 2025 when he is the same age as English currently is? Scary to contemplate.

Ben Longs name being mentioned btw. Not that i think we'd be interested, but obviously has some ties to us from his VFL days.

Whatever happens this trade period I’m just hopeful we get players who are A GRADE, not B GRADE fodder.
If they can’t/won’t play 22 games (baring injury), I’m not interested. And I hope Sam Power isn’t either.

To bring in an A grader we need to offer up quality… or potential quality so given our lack of draft picks and the need to have picks available for Darcy it sounds like you’re going down the path of pushing out players.

                              So let’s work out who?

For mine, an A GRADE ruck and an A GRADE full back (allowing Keath to intercept) are absolute givens.
Grundy and Moore = perfect, but that’s a pipe dream and isn’t going to happen.

But this is the type of players I’m talking about. Guys that will be automatic selection, make our team instantly higher grade, and will play every game. How we get these types of players I have no idea. I’m not in BT’s league, but this club needs to be ruthless with this.

But put it this way, if Collingwood came to us and said you can have Grundy and Moore for Macrae and our first pick…id do it. But that’s me.
