Re: Grand final: Claremont v williamstown

Vez needs to be able to do stints through the midfield for me, he simply has to build his tank to AFL standard this preseason or his AFL career will pass him by. Being a stay at home forward is too limiting for him. He's really at the cross road at the moment.

Was good to watch the game on Saturday arvo.
      My main observations were;

-Wallis was able to get the first touch at the centre bounce nearly every time - was reading the tapouts and getting quick hands out exceptionally well.

      - Schofield has some poise and will be a player.

      - Vezspremi should be in the Bulldogs side.

      - Djerkerra runs around like a mad man but is a battler at best.

      - Howard's kicking was great.

      - Reid can't play.

      - Mulligan can't play.

      - Although he looks ungainly - Barlow goes ok - he puts his head over it - and works hard - we could do a lot worse than Ed Barlow as a player to add some flexibility to the side.

Agree with most of this Oz, especially your appraisal of Reid and Mulligan. I'd be very surprised if Reid stays on the list, we may offer him up for trade but let's face it he may be worth a 4th rounder.

I'd think we would be lucky to get anything for either of them.

              Seagulls win first Foxtel Cup

WILLIAMSTOWN is the inaugural Foxtel Cup champion, kicking away from Claremont to win Saturday's Grand Final by 21 points in a high quality clash at Patersons Stadium.

The Seagulls kicked three unanswered goals in the final term to win 9.5 (59) to 5.8 (38), with respected midfielder Ben Jolley winning the Coles Medal as best afield for his game-high 30 possessions and eight clearances.

Williamstown - which entered the clash with 15 Western Bulldogs players, including three rookies - was also well served by Mitch Wallis (19 disposals), Jordan Roughead (19 and two goals), Christian Howard (18 and two) and Nathan Djerrkura (two goals).

Coach Peter German's team withstood a third-quarter rally from Claremont, which came to life after half-time and drew within five points of the visitors at the final break.

The Tigers, who sit second on the WAFL ladder, were led superbly by mature-age draft hopeful Kane Mitchell, who won 13 of his 25 possessions in contests and was his team's best midfielder.

Onballer Tom Swift, who battled with Wallis for most of the afternoon to finish with 21 possessions, and forward Andrew Foster (13) were also prominent, while West Coast forward Gerrick Weedon sparked the Tigers' fightback when he was switched to half-back in the second half.

Former Eagle Beau Wilkes was the team's leading goalkicker with two, while West Coast defender Brett Jones had the better of Williamstown's Patrick Veszpremi.

The Seagulls wasted opportunities in the first half, failing to capitalise on the inside midfield work of Jolley and Wallis.

Claremont's pressure around stoppages was a highlight early, but Jason Tutt and Roughead broke the shackles for Williamstown and kicked goals in the opening term, while Weedon got the Tigers on the board.

In a dominant second quarter the visiting Seagulls had 10 inside 50s to three, but added just two goals, to Ed Barlow and Howard.

Swift and Fremantle's Byron Schammer had been well held early by the visitors, but they played a hand in their side's only goal of the second term, to Wilkes.

The game turned on its head in the third term, with Claremont gaining the midfield ascendency, but they couldn't maintain that momentum through the final quarter.

              Claremont 1.2 2.2 5.5 5.8 (38)
              Williamstown 2.1 4.3 6.4 9.5 (59)

              GOALS
Claremont: Wilkes 2, Weedon, Bradshaw, C Jones
Williamstown: Howard 2, Roughead 2, Djerrkura 2, Hooper, Barlow, Tutt

              BEST
Claremont: Mitchell, Foster, Weedon, B Jones, Stevenson, Swift

I did not think Jones got the better of Vez. As mentioned before, Panos in the best is puzzling.

Howard was good - most pleasing was his willingness to run...I have not really seen him absolutely bust a gut before to really get to a contest where he was at best a 10% chance to get the footy/have an impact. But he was willing to do it and got the rewards.

Tutt is OK. I don't like his decision making but he kicks it well enough and has a nice turn of speed...

Wallis and Schofield are babies and not ready for senior footy.

                          Johannison is fast.
Firstly, we rely on you to be impolite

                          Secondly, thanks for the insights

I'm particularly interested in the 2nd and 3rd year players.

Sounds like Howard was impressive and showed a bit.

Can Tutt's decision making be improved given he has good pace and nice boot?

Are Howard and Tutt starting to play with confidence and belief?

I've seen nothing of Johanissen - Does he look worth persevering with?

Wallis and Schofield have impressed me mentally - they have a lot to learn and plenty of physical development to do but they both seem like winners to me.

Perhaps i'm wrong but just reading between the lines Roughead seemed dissapointed that Hudson and Minson have played the majority of the season with the dogs and not himself.

And so he should be. Roughy should be getting more games than both of them if we are going to climb up the ladder anytime soon.
