Re: WOOF - 2011 Official Phantom Draft (3 Rounds)
I'd be surprised if we will overlook a running player with our first pick on draft day but I'd also ask what appeals to you about Frost?I would have gone with the best available KPD at 17 and to me that would have been Frost(Lockyer was also available at 39, he's also one I don't mind). I just think we are desperate for a young quality developing KPD on our list, we don't have any.
If we wait another season it could really come back to bite us as it's possible next year could be Lakes last season and many players never recover from an injury like Morris's.
We have many needs and one draft won't balance the list. My view is that with a stronger draft in 2012 and no doubt picking from a better position and an additional pick we can address both midfield and key position needs better then that we can from pick 17 this year. If Lockyer is available available at pick 39 (I think he will be long by then) he would probably come into play for us but he is only 191.5cm tall and really is more of an athletic defender than a genuine key position player. He tested exceptionally well for his running and was in my estimation very similar to Markworth.
To me Lockyer might be the better selection than Frost.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Re: WOOF - 2011 Official Phantom Draft (3 Rounds)
I would be shocked. Surely - surely - players who can both win the ball and carry it our our absolute need in this draft.
KPD? Well, we already have Lake, Williams and Markovic who have proven capable. Morris will be down there, so will Murphy and Picken - I just don't see the same need that others do.
Ruck I think we desperately need but that is because I am not convinced Cordy will ever play or that Minson will ever amount to much.
Runners - that is what we need. With Cooney out, Sherman (perish the thought 'cos I have zero faith in him) out with various injuries, with Hargrave under a continual cloud and Gilbee seemingly shot, we need players who can win the ball then run with it. If that have a bit of that 'x'-factor element (which is why I hope Crozier slips) all the better.
In our draft, if I was doing the Dogs I would have almost certainly picked Devon Smith. I know he is small but that doesn't seem to phase our recruiters but he runs his backside off, does it at pace and is not scared to stick his head over it.What should I tell her? She's going to ask.Comment

Re: WOOF - 2011 Official Phantom Draft (3 Rounds)
My strategy with the Dockers picks was pretty simple. Pick 'the best' 185cm + runner with pick one, grab a small forward with pick 20, a kpd with 29 and gamble that Bootsma would be available at 58. Given mostly east coast posters on here and the fact that Bootsma did not play in the NC's I figured I would be pretty safe!
As an aside, I think that Freo will only use 3 picks.
As it turned out, my plans to take Crozier were scuppered and I went to my next choice, Seb Ross. Pretty happy. I missed my second pick due to work but would have taken Smith - I have him as gone by then and Freo taking Murray Newman, but that is another story. Sam Frost was still there at 29 which surprised me - I have Freo taking Lockyer at this pick but Frost just offers so much more in terms of pure athletic potential.
That was that. What should I tell her? She's going to ask.Comment

Originally I was of the same opinion as chef.I'd be surprised if we will overlook a running player with our first pick on draft day but I'd also ask what appeals to you about Frost?

We have no young KPD's. Lake at best has 2 years left, Williams is injury prone and isn't of great quality, whilst Morris is better suited to the medium and smalls. That leaves Markovic who whilst OK, won't be contending with the best KPF's anytime soon. The reality is, we need to develp an 'A Grade' quality KPD.
However, at pick 17 in a compromised draft with a batch of inconsistent talls - it's probably a waste. We'll get more value out of addressing another need - a quality mid (preferably quick).
As you said GVGjr, it does mean that we'll have to draft the best available KPD with one of our first round picks next year.
I don't think we're desperate for rucks. Minson isn't the best ruckman going around, but he isn't the worst. He's physical and provides a contest. He's clearly better suited to taking the #1 ruck role, which he was unable to do with Hudson at the club. He's not as bad as many proclaim IMO.Ruck I think we desperately need but that is because I am not convinced Cordy will ever play or that Minson will ever amount to much.
In our draft, if I was doing the Dogs I would have almost certainly picked Devon Smith. I know he is small but that doesn't seem to phase our recruiters but he runs his backside off, does it at pace and is not scared to stick his head over it.
Roughead is a good young/developing ruck that can provide cover at times. Still another 2 years off though.
I agree about Cordy. I've never rated him - even as a junior. Hopefully he can carve out a career as a defender or forward.
We do need to pick up another ruck, but with the sub rule, we can afford to address this need last. Especially considering we've got massive holes everywhere else.
Definitely agree on Smith - I would prefer him to Markworth. He's just a seriously good footballer with the only 'weakness' being his height. If he's available, I hope we bite.W00F!Comment

Re: WOOF - 2011 Official Phantom Draft (3 Rounds)
Adelaide Crows
Pick 27 - Alex Forster 189cm 77kgs
Medium sized defender, who can run and carry the ball, makes good decisions and disposes well. Projects as a running defender who can play on small and medium forwards. Should also develop so that he can run through the middle. Is a good height, has improved a lot over the course of the season and has senior experience. Should play a few games next year. Grigg was the slightly more preferred option, but very happy to land Forster here.
Pick 41 - Alex Woodward 175cm 80kgs
Small inside player, quick and can win the clearances. Besides Thomson Crows don't really have a lot of inside ball winners. Woodward has good hands in close, and can move the ball from congestion to advantage. Needs to improve his fitness, but that will come. After taking a taller running player early, happy to go small here. Fits a need for pace and ball winning ability. Had wanted to secure a tall here, but the ones we wanted were off the table.
Pick 46 - Matthew Jacquier - 188cm 82kgs
Good sized player who could play as a forward, but should be able to play through the back half and the midfield as his running ability develops. He's very good with his ball use and decision making, and his contested marking is a highlight. Will need to improve his fitness and add some other strings to his bow but will be able to play alongside Tippett and Walker as a point of difference. Not sure where he may go in the real ND, probably somewhere from about this range to a rookie selection.
Pick 64 - Steve Rusca - 184cm 81kgs
Ended up being a draft that has loaded up on smaller players, but don't have too big an issue with that although the loss of height with Davis, Gunston and Maric over the trade period may see the Crows go tall with at least one selection. If it isn't with 27, then I just think the smaller players will be the better ones available for their needs.
Rusca is a very good prospect for mine. Local lad, good size, solid running ability. Should be able to play through a range of positions, probably best suited to a defender/midfielder role. Tough player who will win his own ball, use it well it although not flashy, and will just go about his business. Sort of player that clubs should be really looking at late because he has a good chance of becoming a consistent player at AFL level, although never likely to be a game breaker.
Overall the Crows have landed 3 local lads, added some players who can player inside and outside, have good skills, decision making and some with a turn of speed. Should really allows the Crows to sure up their midfield stocks and add some more versatility to the list. Really would have liked one tall, but pretty happy with the players at the end of the day.Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?Comment

Re: WOOF - 2011 Official Phantom Draft (3 Rounds)
Just what I've read, seen and heard(i have a mate who works in the recruiting department of one of the AFL clubs). At his best(I know he is inconsistent ATM, but most young talls are) he's up there with every other KPD in the draft, extremely athletic, loves to take the game on and he is meant to be a quality individual of the field as well(which McCartney likes). He has also shown an ability to go into the ruck(perfect 2ND ruck candidate) and has been able to change the course of a few games from there.I'd be surprised if we will overlook a running player with our first pick on draft day but I'd also ask what appeals to you about Frost?

Re: WOOF - 2011 Official Phantom Draft (3 Rounds)
Sydney Swans Draft Summary
Selections
21. Tom Mitchell (180/73) Father/Son
43. Jordan Lockyer (191/85)
61. Xavier Richards (194/81)
The Strategy
Having picked up one of the best midfielders in the draft in Tom Mitchell I felt we needed to get some taller players in. With only picks 43 & 61 we were not in any great position to influence the draft. It was a matter of wait and see what slips through.
With Lockyer surprisingly available at 43 I couldn't pick him quick enough. Having secured a tall defender i was hoping Ben Brown the 198cm ruck/forward from Glenorchy might be available at 61. No such luck so I went for Xav Richards (brother of Ted), a versatile athletic tall, who can swing forward or back.
Given the ordinary picks I was quite happy with the outcome.Listening to Brahm's 3rd RacketComment

Re: WOOF - 2011 Official Phantom Draft (3 Rounds)
Selections:
#15. Richmond - Elliott Kavanagh
#26. Richmond - Jackson Paine
#55. Richmond - Marley Williams
Strategy:
- Richmond need to bolster their midfield. Cotchin and Martin are quality, Foley is solid (but injury prone) and Deledio is played all over the shop. It was a case of seeing who would slip to #15. I had hoped Adams would, but he was taken a few picks earlier. I had Docherty high on the list, but he was taken earlier too. Therefore, it was a pretty easy decision in the end. Kavanagh would be a perfect selection for them. A quality mid who can play inside and outside, and would mix it with Cotchin/Martin extremely well. Really dangerous trio. Considered: Seb Ross
- I would have liked to pick up a pure inside midfielder with #26, because they are still a couple of players short. However, I was very mindful of the Tigers forward line woes. Outside of Riewoldt, they don't have designated goal kickers. They recruited Miller last year as evidence of this fact. Griffifths is injury prone and may be better suited back. Post has struggled at AFL level. Therefore, I went with a KPF in Jackson Paine who I rate. Great size who presents strongly and takes a fine grab. Also - he can kick a goal. Very neat skills. Don't be surprised if they go another mid here, though. Considered: Sam Kerridge, Fraser McInnes
- All along I wanted to pick an inside mid with #55, but I changed last minute. Whilst Williams can win his own ball and is very good 1 on 1, it's his outside running ability which makes him a damaging player. Only new to the game and is raw, so he'll take 2-3 years to develop, but he could be a very good AFL player. Given Richmond have little to no depth in the midfield, Williams would be a nice addition and offers something on the outside which they don't have. Considered: Cameron Ellis-Yolmen
Overall, Richmond still have a lot of holes but they are quietly plugging away at them. Their list is continually improving, and with Kavanagh, Paine and Williams - it should continue to. It might be tempting for Richmond to target one area, and draft specifically for there. If so, expect them to target the midfield and maybe snag a forward late. Still have a need for inside mids, but I figure they are the most easy to find - be it in future drafts or the rookie draft.W00F!Comment

Re: WOOF - 2011 Official Phantom Draft (3 Rounds)
Selections:
#22. Carlton - Brad McKenzie
#44. Carlton - Tom Curran
#62. Carlton - Dylan Buckley (Carlton F/S)
Strategy:
- Carlton's list is quite well balanced. I wanted to pick a player with good foot skills, given they made this an area of importance two years ago. McKenzie is one of the best kicks in the draft and while slow, could be a very damaging player. Carlton have enough pace and almost enough ball winning ability, so a player like McKenzie would be a nice fit. Considered: Mitchell Grigg
- The weakness is Carlton's side is their ability to finish. Namely, a big target outside of Waite. Henderson is a better defender, Setanta is gone, Warnock/Hampson are ineffective and Kruzer is a better ruck who can only provide spells in the forward half. Carlton need a big man - not a flanker like Dobosz. Tom Curran is a huge kid, with serious physical presence, good hands solid disposal. He's perfect for the Carlton and I wouldn't be surprised if they jumped at him with #22. Like most young big men, he has consistency issues but on talent he's a good prospect. Considered: N/A
- Buckley was taken F/S.
Overall, Carlton aren't a major player in this year's draft. They will be satisified to add McKenzie's weapon to their side, and probably more excited to land and develop Curran. They may go for the best inside midfielder at some point, but with Murphy stepping up to help Judd - they can perhaps concentrate on a few other areas.W00F!Comment
