    Brisbane's selections:

    Pick 7 - Cameron McCarthy - WA, KPF - 194cm, 84kgs

McCarthy is going to be a very interesting prospect come draft day, but the view for Brisbane was we needed to stock up on some quality key position players this year as part of an on-going rebuild. We're confident we'll be able to add more running players who'll slot in a develop a bit quicker over the coming 2-3 years.

McCarthy is a power forward who showed his wares in the Champs with strong marking, good kicking for goal including kicking the clutch goal to win a game for WA and strong defensive appetite. Inside a full time AFL environment we think there is plenty of scope for continued improvement and given we are losing Brown and have delisted Cornelius he was our priority at pick 7 and we were very happy to land our man.

    Pick 22 - Michael Apeness - Vic, Ruck/KPP - 199cm, 98kgs

For me personally, he's another interesting player who I can see being selected by Brisbane, although perhaps with a later second round pick rather than this selection.

Brisbane needs another developing ruck/forward now that Longer has departed and Apeness is probably one of the better positioned players to develop into that ruck turned forward who'll be able to give a chop out in the ruck and rest forward to good effect. He's not the best mover, but recorded a decent enough 3km time for a big man and should improve inside an AFL system with his fitness, strength and body shape.

    Pick 25 - Billy Hartung - Vic, small midfielder - 176cm, 68kgs

A very slight, small player who may go as late as the rookie draft but in my opinion will go before the 3rd round is out on draft day, but most likely in the 20-35 range.

Outstanding endurance athlete and although his speed testing wasn't as good, having watched him play he has enough dash to play outside the contest with effect although he won't become the next Brad Hill or Lewis Jetta. He has a bit of Dahlhaus about him in that his junior career has demonstrated a willingness to take the game on and work very hard defensively. Reasonably reliable user who doesn't mind a goal and loves to run and carry. I see him starting as a small forward and eventually developing further up the field.

    Pick 28 - Mitch Harvey - SA, KPF - 196cm, 96kgs

A tall forward who I liked in the Champs and think has a strong chance at a good future at AFL level.

Really big bodied forward who I understand tested under duress and didn't record very impressive results and has spent the majority of the year playing footy in the school system. He played some good roles at the Champs where I was impressed by his competitiveness particularly at ground level for a big man. A strong mark with clean hands in the air and at ground level who is a pretty reliable shot at goal. He'll be another with plenty of scope for improvement and with McCarthy and Apeness can really lock down our developing KPP players for the next 10 years if Brisbane can get the development right and have a tad a luck.

    Pick 33 - James Sicily - Vic, HF/Mid - 186cm, 76kgs

A young player who I like although will go a bit later in the actual draft I suspect.

Has some good qualities, good hands, pace, agility and a reliable user. Should develop into a wing, high half forward at AFL level as he has pace and skill but could also play a role as a medium sized marking player too. Good game sense and hands. Should improve in an AFL system and after grabbing a raft of talls with our earlier selections fits in well to offset the losses of Karnezis and Polec.

    Pick 34 - Malcolm Karpany - SA, HF/Mid - 176cm, 71kgs

Another young player who I suspect falls a bit later than this on draft day, but has some exciting attributes and I can see a few teams having a bit of interest in him.

Very quick and skillful player who does his best work outside the contest where he will be a 70m player in that he will take the space and then execute a good finish. Is a reliable shot on goal and should become a midfield/winger with high hurt factor if he can develop his contested game a little more. A player that will excite a lot but has some areas to build on but again we think he adds that mid/half forward skill set we need with some pace and outside ability.

Overall, we're happy to walk away from the draft with 3 KPP and 3 quality smalls who offer speed and endurance. We have taken 2 key forwards we hope can develop into long term players and grow together, as well as another developing ruck who we'll be able to allow some time to develop his fitness and his body shape before he's required to play senior footy. We like that he should be able to rest forward for long stints. As it fell, the smaller players we got are all quite short, but all have attributes which mean they should be able to transition to long term AFL players with some improvement in certain areas.

The other player we really considered at 33/34 was Jared Jansen as that really good sized player from WA.

      Sydney Selections

      Draft Strategy

The original plan was to pick best player available with pick 15. I was hoping for a fleet footed running player with Salem very much that player. With picks 32 & 35 I was hoping to land a ruckman (Ben Brown) and a small forward (Garlett or Impey) who could work in tandem with Franklin & Tippett.

      Pick 15 Christian Salem - Sandringham 183cm/81kg

Delighted to get Salem with this pick. I wanted a quality running player who could dispose the ball beautifully. Salem is very versatile. he can play off half back, go forward and kick a goal or run through the midfield. My view is he will eventually take over the Rhys Shaw half back role.

      Pick 32 Ben Brown - Werribee 199cm/98kg

I went for a ready made ruckman who could also go forward and become a marking target. he is a direct replacement for Mumford and gives the Swans some big man depth and support to Pyke. Only injury had prevented Brown from being picked in previous drafts. Brown is mobile and has excellent skills for a big man.

      Pick 35 Zak Jones - Dandenong 181cm/74kg

Very surprised to see Jones still available here so hard to resist taking the hard at it midfielder. Was originally looking for a small forward with this pick and had Garlett or Impey been available I might have had to call for extra time!!! Jones should fit the Swans mould of hard working, competitive, give your all midfielder.

        Greater Western Sydney

        Pick 1: Tom Boyd - Eastern Ranges - 199/102

No Brainer. Already he is as big as just about any KPF going. Yet is mobile and will only get bigger and stronger. Has an astonishing under age record, if you've seen him play, you know what I mean.

        Pick 2: Josh Kelly - Sandringham - 183/75

I've been a long time admirer of Josh, I was hoping he'd slip to 4, but GWS will not overlook him. Strongly considered with Hogan and Martin for the mini draft, he's been on everyone's radar for a while. I thought he performed very well at the 2012 combine, and this year he improved on all aspects. If he can keep improving on this trajectory, then I hope he gets home sick and comes to us.

Pick 14: Darcy Gardiner - Geelong Falcons- 193/85

Best key defender in the draft for mine. Davis (when fit) needs a chop out from another key tall defender. With Bruce going, and Gilham better suited to a 3rd tall and question marks over other young kids, I felt we needed to address this and having Gardiner at this pick is just another cherry on top of the GWS sundae. He will be a very good player IMO.

        Pick 29: Jimmy Tsitas - Geelong Falcons - 181/78

Thrilled Jimmy slid down to 29!!! Team mate of Darcy, Jimmy is a very good prospect for the HBF or eventually on ball. In following Zaine this year, Jimmy was everywhere, not only as co-captain but as a courageous onfield leader and gun player. He is tough as nails and ball magnet, if BMac was selecting Jimmy would be first picked.

        Over all:

Trade: Mumford, Lamb, Addison, Hunt and Shaw add some much needed physicality to the team.
Injury: Davis gets a preseason and Patton comes back
Draft: We get the best FF, best FB, best midfielder and gun HBF (cum midfielder), plus if we want to use any other picks, plus we upgrade any rookies we want and get the no. 1 pick in the rookie draft.

This is what the above looks like for 2014:

        B: Hunt Gardiner Gilham
        HB: Tsitas Davis Shaw
        C: O'Rourke Ward Lamb
        HF: Hampton Cameron Palmer
        F: DFA Patton Boyd
        Foll: Mumford, Kelly, Scully

Int: from 15+ players who were top 15 picks, ie. Whitfield, Shiel, etc

I think we've had a good off season, especially with this draft.

          Hawthorn

          Pick 24 - Mitch Thorp
As posted in the selections thread, this was definitely on the early side of predictions, but I think Hawthorn are a chance to take him there given their need to replace Franklin and the history he has with the Hawks. Powerhouse season as captain coach at South Launceston, showing his ability as an original pick 6 and the leadership skills he has developed.

          Pick 38 - Dwayne Wilson
Wilson has pace and good foot skills, both needed in the Hawks midfield. Didn't get a lot of the ball at the champs and has poor endurance but has real hurt factor. Could develop into a very dangerous player in a professional AFL program.
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

            Gold Coast

            Pick 5 - Kade Kolodjashnij
At this stage it appears likely that GC will take KK or Scharenberg to bolster their half back stocks. They lack a bit of pace and polish, which is why we've gone with KK who is an exciting and versatile package. A partnership with McKenzie makes it a deadly half back line in the future, whilst KK should also be able to push further up the ground if needed.

            Pick 20 - Lewis Taylor
Pace and skill are still high on the agenda at this point of the draft, but given Gold Coast's healthy list it makes it easier to go best available. It so happens to be that needs and best available fell our way, with Lewis Taylor being unexpectedly available. Extremely talented outside player with pace and skill, follows up his work well and stays involved in a passage of play. Only small but he's super talented.

Pick 27 - Gold Coast - James Battersby
Again not the biggest player going around, but he's one of the best users of the ball in the entire draft. He's such a smart footballer who has great vision and composure, performing well at both U18 level and senior level.

            Overall:
Very happy, almost the perfect draft. In terms of needs all three address certain needs. KK with his pace, skill and ability to play HBF, Taylor with his pace/skill and Battersby with his skill and ability to play HBF/Mid. Also worth noting that footy nous was important in this draft, which all three of these young guys have. Gold Coast would like some forward options, but that can be addressed in future drafts.

              WesternBulldogs

              Pick 4 - Matthew Sharenberg

At 191 cm and with pace and a great accurate kick, Matt is an ideal choice for not only a backman but may be able to slot in as a tall midfielder in coming years. He is a smart footballer and really impressed me in the championships with his cool head, long kicking and ability to read the play.

              Pick 42 - Rory Lobb

The phantom drafts have him going in the late 40's and whether he lasts to our pick maybe doubtful. At 205cm and 98kg, Rory is an investment into our future ruck stocks. Every club needs young rucks to develop and we are no exception with only three on our list and Minson starting to age in the next few years. Rory is very athletic, and has a basketball background and the ability to also push forward.

                Pick 16 – Dom Sheed

We were surprised he lasted until our pick. We thought West Coast would go Dom instead of Blake Acres. With an ageing list of midfielders, Dom’s one that we think can have an impact within 12 -18 months.

A Western Australian midfielder who won the Larke Medal for the best division one player in the Under-18 Championships, despite suffering a broken collarbone. Sheed wins his own footy around stoppages; a telling reflector of his strong work ethic. Despite not displaying prolific speed, he has a mature body and is expected to feature in his first year in the AFL system. The left-footer is also catching the eye of recruiters for his decision-making by both hand and foot, especially in and around traffic. Averaged 28 disposals and six clearances in the Championships and was a dominant force against the other top under-18 talent in the country.
Ball-winning midfielder and Larke Medallist who thrives around stoppages

                Pick 36 – Toby Nankervis

Our ruck division is balsawood and spare parts, let’s be honest. We traded Trent West. We’ve then got Dawson Simpson and Big H constantly injured. Mark Blicavs was meant to be a project ruckman – he became the only man available most of the time. We also see Nathan Vardy’s future down forward, if he ever gets on the park regularly.

After missing out on selection in last year's draft, Nankervis is this year's leading ruck prospect. Weighing in at a massive 200cm and 100kg, he caught recruiters' attention with a standout NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with Tasmania, gaining All-Australian honours as well as the joint Division 2 Harrison Medal. Nankervis has. A North Launceston export, Nankervis has continued to show his improvement from last season both in the ruck and as a deep forward.

An athletic ruckman who provides a strong target around the ground

                Pick 41 – Luke Reynolds

With Pods moving on we felt we really had a spot for a floating forward/high forward with composure and a loping left foot. Luke fitted the mould best.

Medium forward with a powerful left foot and the ability to kick goals from outside 50. Moves across the ground effortlessly and is clean below his knees. Presenting up well on the lead, he is strong overhead and has the ability to play as a marking player

Powerful left foot medium forward with the ability to kick goals from outside 50.

                Pick 54 – Hugh Beasley

We like the look of Hugh, He’s an attacking backman who reads the play well and like to run. He’s a project and will take time, but it’s another area of need that required filling.

Rated the fastest player at the Oakleigh Chargers despite measuring in at 192cm, Beasley looked like enjoying a bumper 2013 before dislocating his knee cap. A very aggressive tall defender with excellent closing speed, he had the better of expected No.1 pick Tom Boyd early in the season and thrives on one-on-one battles. He's strong in the air and having run a blistering 2.89 seconds for the 20m sprint at the state combine, he's got the acceleration to stick with any leading forward.

Super quick tall defender who had the better of Tom Boyd early in the season
