I'd take Watts in a heartbeat, and I would be happy to spend something like our Higgins compo to get him. He is obviously very highly skilled, with a good footy brain, we just need to coach some mongrel into him. I own a couple pacers and you never want to buy a horse that has been with a good trainer, as it is very hard to improve them. What you're looking for is a horse where you can see potential but from a trainer you think you can improve upon. I think Jack Watts has potential and the Melbourne Football Club is a trainer we can improve from.

He's not Dale, not close, but he's not played the second/third tall role consistently from my memory. But I'd have him working with Scarlo and Dale and trying to turn him into that type of player. As you say, he's IQ and skills are solid which is a strength of Dale's. We'd just need to back in that a different culture, coach that works with his style, a new opportunity and fresh role would work for him.
I think he's the anti-thesis of Morris - Morris is a very limited footballer (in terms of natural talent) who has overcome his deficiencies by sheer will and dedication.

Watts is the opposite - if I had to use a modern footballer as a prototype I'd prefer Mackie: tall enough to provide a chop-out to help taller defenders, but skilled & quick enough to run off his man and provide defensive rebound with both run and footskills.

Although we're building a team based around contested ball, Watts is actually the kind of player that would suit us.

He could still be a player I reckon.
I don't think a club like ours could take a risk on him.
I just see it backfiring and it would effect us in many other ways compared to if a more successful club tried.

He's also not really the type we need in terms of his game style.
Where would we play him? We need a strong contested marking forward, not another non-defensive forward who doesn't hit the contest. Perhaps as a defender but would we be prepared to pay the price required for that role?

He would be a very effective distributor across half back, and we are not exactly flushed with quality supply of on our list outside of Bob. Indeed he has played this role at Melbourne recently and with good success, but Melbourne need so much more out of him so he has been played in the heat of the kitchen and up forward more by Roos this year. I agree with Mofra, his skill set compliments what we already have. However his lack of competitiveness and desire is an issue that may or may not improve at a new club. Certainly the baggage of being the top draft pick and key forward messiah at Melbourne would have stifled his instincts a little, which could explain some (but certainly not all) of his lack of intensity at the contest.

Just heard our shocking stats of one on one's in the defensive end.
Wood 38% beaten, Roughy and Dale both in the 30% range.

Agree on Hill but Everitt has become an extremely solid footballer, would fit snugly into our best 22. I never thought application or courage were a fault of Andrejs, just looked like he didn't believe he had the talent. On Watts, I wouldn't touch him after going through three coaches, if he went back to the VFL and tore it up in the way Dan Connors is now then I'd certainly consider him as having turned a corner but before then it's just a spot on the list we could utilise better.

Everitt should be a key position player at that height.

Goldsack's a very good get for a club on the fringes like Port. I wouldn't mind a flutter at O'Shea if he were on offer, has a bit more pace than our current tall backs, not sure what he's like ball in hand though

I should leave it alone but you're not right

Not impressed by any of those names. Goldsack is like Tom Young, tall but can't play key position. $400k seems way overs
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

Same for me . Goldsack's versatile, but he's a third tall at best at either end.
Good defensive forward, but no thank you at 400 large
