The boiler room was where all the ravers go - my mistake. But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.Comment

Re: Best gig you've been to.
From memory when they finished pretty much everyone left the shed, so whoever the next band was were playing to no one.
That would make you feel good wouldn't it.Comment

Re: Best gig you've been to.
Was that the gig that was featured on their hilarious fly on the wall doco, "15 minutes to rock"? You were in elite company with about 50 diehards that night
Really tough to answer this one. Whilst I'm not a massive fan of their albums, The Tea Party played a blistering set at Alternative Nation in 1995 - they really brought the chops in a live setting. Faith No More also blew everyone away as the headline act that night.
Radiohead at Festival Hall around the time they released OK Computer was a mesmerising experience. I also loved seeing The National at the Myer Music Bowl last year."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

It might of been, I've seen them about 20 times and i was a little inebriated that night. By chance i have seen that at Falls Creek and Mt Buller and neither time i had planned to go there because the Fauves were playing, was just an awesome surprise.
With the amount of great songs they have had i really don't know how they weren't bigger than they were.Comment

Re: Best gig you've been to.
My Brownlow votes would be:
3. Nirvana at The Palace (on my 23rd birthday) - Not long after SLTS blew up. By mid set my t-shirt was a torn, soaked mess so I bought a tour t-shirt, which was also destroyed by the end of the night. Absolutely life changing. Set highlight was when the big chorus kicked in on Lithium, with the entire crowd heaving as one. Its easy to be cynical about grunge now, but damn they were exciting times - nothing has come along to nearly match it since and it's been over 20 years now.
2. Iggy Pop closing The Falls festival New Years Eve 1997. I was just at the right angle to see Iggy bouncing off the walls like the lunatic he is for a full 5 minutes backstage, before hitting the stage, topless and wearing purple rubber pants, just before midnight. Best start to the New Year ever watching him pump out 2 hrs+ of pure energy, including all the Stooges highlights.
1. P J Harvey at the Enmore 1999 supported by a newly reformed Go-Betweens. I see PJ every time she comes out here, always very different, supreme musician. The Go-Betweens set was quite an event after such a long time apart. Wierdly, I was sitting the row behind a clearly emotional Lindy Morrison (who hadn't been invited to rejoin the band) which added to the intensity of the set - especially when Robert Forster did Dive For Your Memory.
Honourable mentions:
- You Am I;seen them over 20 times. Always deliver - proper rock'n'roll band. Favourite memory is getting backstage at a gig at the POW, last thing I can remember is sharing a bottle of red wine with Tim Rogers, drinking straight from the bottle, and discussing the merits of various obscure 60s acts. Woke up freezing and horribly hungover on Fitzroy St (bit scarier in the early 90s than it is now) but way worth it.
- Weddos; anywhere but especially the Christmas shows. I also have really fond memories of seeing them the night of the 1997 Grand Final. Mick Thomas is a mad Saints fan. If they won it would've been the best gig ever, but there was something beautiful about him playing his broken heart out anyway, talking footy between every song. Squeezebox Wally great also.
- First Melbourne Big Day Out. Headliners NickCave & Bad Seeds & Sonic Youth both at peak of their powers. First act I saw (around midday) was The *!*!*!*!s *!*!*!*!s playing on a small outside stage. It was sunny, Fred Negro was sweating profusely, looking decidedly unhealthy, completely naked (other than cowboy boots) and covering himself with half a watermelon which he would thrust into. There were about 30 people in the 'crowd', about 20 feet from him. We could've stood closer but no-one was game. What a showman.
I've seen a lot of great gigs over the years. Others I would rate very highly include; Leonard Cohen, Prince, Fugazi, Beck, Magic Dirt, Sigur Ros, Elvis Costello, David Byrne, Dave Graney, Carter USM, Weezer, Ride, Paul Kelly, Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, Bob Dylan, Beasts Of Bourbon, Pavement, Regurgitator, David Bowie, Midnight Oil and many others the damaged brain cells can't recall right now.Comment

Re: Best gig you've been to.
I've never really been a concert goer. Living in the country with no money growing up I just couldn't afford to go but in recent years I've managed to get to quite a lot of shows. In no order...
Pearl Jam at Etihad. Wow wow wow wow. Ben Harper was also there which was amazing.
There is a guy by the name of Ed Kowalczyk, front man of the 90's band Live who put on an awesome performance a couple of years back in the Throwing Copper 20 year anniversary tour. Performed the album from start to finish as well as some more Live and Solo tracks and I was completely blown away.
Smashing Pumpkins I never got to see them in their prime but managed to see them every time since they've reformed. Each time they visit they get better. The last show at Festival Hall literally blew me away. I was gobsmacked at the end of their song "United States" Soundgarden followed the night after that SP concert and they were just awesome!Comment

Re: Best gig you've been to.
Great list PeanutsPeanuts.
I don't blame you for your standing back from fred. There's no telling what might happen. The last time I saw fred on stage he was stark naked with a spittete under each arm laying face down in in a mixture of his own urine and vomit. It was pretty rock'n'roll. They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.Comment

I also have vivid memories of Fred Negro and the watermelon at the BDO. Not the kind of thing you forget easily. Just behind an incident at a Dayglo Abortions gig at the Greyhound, for most messed up thing I've seen at a gig.Park that car

Re: Best gig you've been to.
Wow Underdog I am jealous of the backstage pozzie at The Falls. What a legend Tim Rogers is and what a magic event that was. My first multi-day camping music concert (which weren't so common back then), from memory it was the 2nd or 3rd ever Falls and not as massive as it is today.
I particularly remember, long after most had gone to their tents on the first night, Resin Dogs came on to the main stage at about 1 or 2am dressed uniformly like something out of Star Wars, in brown hooded monks capes, blacked out faces and red neon lights for eyes, playing tripped out dance/hip hop with the forest behind them, everyone well wasted in the clear warm night.
After Iggy blew our minds, we had 3 days recovery on the beach at Anglesea. Magic.
As for Fred, UD and TD, what a unique individual he is. I remember seeing the FckFcks one XmasEve (1999 from memory) in the back room at the Espy. By mid-gig he was naked and singing punk versions of Xmas Carols whilst smashing the microphone against his profusely bleeding forehead. He would jump into the crowd and people would run to avoid him (and his blood and sweat).
My partner had never seen them before and was genuinely scared. She insisted we spend the rest of the night in the front bar, which was fine by me as Magic Dirt were prevewing their soon to be released (excellent) What Are Rockstars Doing Today? album and were on fire.
Great days.Comment
