    Foreign Films

There are a lot of great foreign films around and I enjoy watching them…It is amazing how much more you concentrate on a film when you have to read the subtitles to understand what is going on. Greek and Italian films I have no problems with as I can speak and understand both languages and don’t need the aid of subtitles.

Here are some of my favourites…

Amelie – The French movie is one of my favourites is about a Parisian girl who grows up and becomes a waitress and how she intertwines herself in other people’s lives to try and help them.

Raise the Red Lantern – Great Chinese film set in 1920’s China it is about a young woman after the death of her father is married off into a powerful Chinese family and becomes the fourth concubine to her master Chen. It depicts the life of the concubine women - their master each evening would light up the red lantern infront of one of his concubines doors to indicate whom he was to spend his night with. The concubines all try to impress their Master and all end up suffering different fates in their lives. Really is a good film. The role of the fourth concubine is played by Gong Li, China’s most famous actress she plays her role to perfection.

Do you have any favourite foreign films?

Loved a French Farce called The Dinner Game. These socially hugh flying, rich batsrads have a competition to see who can bring the biggest loser to a dinner party. One of them thinks he's found just the guy to win him the prize, but when the loser arrives for the party he accidently causes the rich to slip a disc in his back so they cant go. The loser insists on staying to help out and it turns into the type of farce the Fench do so well.

Not really sure what goes on i the plot in this film-some guy is from a dirt poor village in Thailand where a religious icon gets stolen by thugs and he's sent to Bangcok(I think) to get it Back and theres something abouit a chick he wants to find. but I think Whatever, what's importanmt are the fight scenes. I must have seen it a 1,00 times and they always amaze me.

They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I'm very fond of pre WW2 Gernan classics - like

          - The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Still pretty whacky now even though it was made 90 years ago. Possibly has the best sets ever.

          - Metropolis. The first big budget sci fi movie. The robot was completely copied for the tall robot in the Star wars films

          - M. A very young Peter Lorre as a child murderer. You'll never remember the melody of Peter Gynt without shuddering after watching this. Harrowing from the first scene, when a young girl is looking up at a reward poster for a child killer, as the shadow of the killer crosses the poster as he bends down to strangle her.

The Dr Mabuse (sp?) series is pretty good too.
The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.

l like my asian films. Only got into them recently with 'crouching tiger...' then saw 'House of flying daggers' which was even better.

Great old jap movies by 'Akira Kurosawa' are fantastic bought a box set of his stuff just because l loved the western ' magnificent seven' which was a remake of his movie 'Seven Samauri' which was based on old westerns if you get the drift. Another remake of this movie been made called 'Seven Swords', have got a copy of it but have not watched it yet.

Also don't mind action Hong Kong movies.

YHF, was that the movie where some landlord guy was some type of loony and made canabalistic meals for his tennants? If that is the one, the actress that played Amelie is not the same one.

The short guy from Delicatessen is in Amelie though.

All this talk of foreign films and no one has mentioned the dirty SBS ones. eg Hamon Hamon

Yes that's the one. Sorry I meant either the director or writer was the same..not sure though.

Also although I haven't seen the movie, I've read the film screen play for the Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colours Trilogy Red, Blue and White... the screen play was fantastic so I'm guessing the movie's were pretty good also.
