Re: Stories of Songs
Fame by David Bowie.
He went to a hip New York night club. John Lennon was there and they were having a good time. They started chatting about celebrity etc. They started humming, singing and Bowie started writing. In 15 minutes the song was done.

Ring Of Fire, Johnny Cash.
June Carter wrote the song and gave it to a friend of hers to record. Johnny loved playing it and wanted to record it. He asked June if her friends version was a flop if he could record it and she agreed. Thankfully it was. They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.Comment

Sober by Tool - given the heavy metaphors and meaning in much of their other work, most people think this is a comment on our need for alcohol as a social crutch, or has some comment on spirituality because of the bridges used before each chorus.
It's actually just about a useless roadie they had who was drunk and lazy.Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

It would be must simpler to just mention roadies who weren't drunk and lazy. They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.Comment

Re: Stories of Songs
My favourite Albini production, though, is P J Harvey's Rid Of Me (her 2nd album). An album I will intermittently play on repeat for days, in my opinion an all time great. Mind you, PJs demos of the album for Albini (on which she plays all instruments) were so astonishing, they were also given official release, so he had plenty to work with.
Had a little chuckle at the inside joke as all are basically the same riff, based on More Than a Feeling.
Its a bit like Lou Reeds Sweet Jayne Riff, Keefs Satisfaction riff, Bo Diddleys Who Do You Love? Riff, or many others, can be repackaged in many ways.Comment

Re: Stories of Songs
For mine both are simply magnificent albums that complemented each other perfectly - Nevermind was the ultimate adrenalin rush of endless possibilities ushering in a new era of music for the masses that previously only existed in the fringes. It was a total cultural game-changer, something not many albums in history can boast of achieving. And In Utero was the perfect abrasive response to all the Nevermind copyists that sprang up to try and cash in on something that was created organically and inadvertently took over the world. I still love both of these albums so much and listen to them regularly."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

Re: Stories of Songs
Albini is one of few producers where I will listen to anything he has worked on purely on the recommendation of his involvement. I've had many heated discussions over the years based on my belief that In Utero is a way superior album to Nevermind.

A year or so ago, one of the Foxtel music stations (Max I think) played a Top 100 Riffs of the 90s list. Their top 3 were (1) Self Esteem by Offspring (2) SLTS by Nirvana and (3) Less Than a Feeling by Hoodoo Gurus.

Re: Stories of Songs
I guess the main topic songs talk about:
I enjoy songs that people sing along to oblivious of the obvious lyrics (not in the Nirvana way, a little more innocent), such as Sweat by Inner Circle and Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind. I remember having to ask my younger sister what that Milshake song was bout which took the innocence from our relationship. She wouldn't tell my even younger sister who threw a tantrum and demanded she knew it was about making a milk, flavour and ice cream beveridge that brings all the boys to the yard because it's better than a her friends.... So we thought discretion was the better part of valour and agreed with her...Last edited by bulldogtragic; 15-11-2015, 11:38 AM.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
