Best Sci-Fi movie of all time?

    Anyone else into Sci-fi?

I watched Edge of Tomorrow last night. Thought it was a great movie and would almost crack my top 10 favourite Sci-fi movies of all time.

Anyone else have any recommendations for good sci-fi movies? There's been a bit of a renaissance lately which I'm absolutely loving!

Aliens and Empire Strikes Back are my 1 and 2.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Blade Runner, Fahrenheit 451, Logans Run, The Highlander, Gattaca, The Twilight Zone and Close Encounters are a few favourites of mine.
I would also add the First two Mad Max's and the original and the last two Planet of the Apes if they are in this genre.
Grew up loving the Twilight Zone and have all the episodes on DVD and also the radio serial.

Agreed on the renaissance. It seemed like nobody made any decent sci-fi films for years, but recently I have enjoyed quite a few:
Interstellar, The Martian, Oblivion, Elysium, Looper. You need to like Tom Cruise and Matt Damon though because one or the other is in almost every one!

Of course we also have the new Star Wars and Star Trek franchises. The trailer for the first Star Wars spin off, Rogue One has just dropped and it looks pretty darn good.

Edge of Tomorrow is next on the list to see.

It's something Tom Cruise has tried to do over the years, but given his prattishness I've shied away from his films.

I recently saw The Martian and quite liked it. Is Oblivion and some of the others any good?

The Matrix is one of my most watched movies ever.

The Martian was ok but the plot holes and predictability of it are annoying.

Oblivion I actually really like. It's beautifully shot and has strange melancholic feel to it that draws my attention.
Even with Tom Cruise it's a really good movie and one that I don't mind watching over again.

Another good recent one was 'snowpiercer'. It's a little bizarre but very interesting.

'Children of Men' is one of my faves, amazing single camera 1 shot war scenes that go for minutes. No shaky cam either!

'12 Monkeys' and 'Gravity' are other classics.

The science in The Martian wasn't overly scientific and agreed it's a little predictable, when I watched it I must have been in a good mood.

I'll check out Gravity and Snowpiercer.

Everything I have read about the Martian has been pretty positive about the science involved. Of course it's not a documentary and there are several inaccuracies and liberties taken, but by and large it is plausible. Certainly as a piece of Hollywood entertainment it is about as close as you are ever going to get to realism in a science fiction movie.

Read the book - brilliant. Haven't seen the film.

Yeah I've heard the same about the Martian it's supposed to be ok but I haven't seen it yet. I've heard the science in Interstellar is pretty loose, but I haven't seen it either - have them both on the laptop just got to find the time.

Watching Looper tonight, good reviews and has to be better than watching Essendon.

I quite liked Moon although its a bit claustrophobic. Anyone else seen Moon and enjoyed it?

Have also heard good things about Snowpiercer. One from left of field has anyone seen Troll Hunter? I think its a Norwegian film. Good reviews but haven't got around to watching it yet. I think it has a kind of Blair Witch / Cloverfield feel (8mm part doco).

There's a fair bit of criticism out there, but I agree with you it's not supposed to be anything other than entertainment and nothing really bothered me at the time. Apparently the book does a good job of explaining itself, more so than you could do in a feature length film.

To the OP, I really love Blade Runner and was so happy to see it at the Astor. I've also always had a soft spot for Gattaca. 2001 is just astounding considering the time at which it was made and the way it is filmed always amazes me.
