Re: Favourite song of a society/social awareness perspective.
Some great bands went through there though. I used to write for a street mag called Forte in Geelong, similar to Melbourne's Inpress I suppose and I got to interview a number of really cool bands before they went on stage. Propagandhi was one of them and they were articulate, shy and quietly spoken, get them on stage though and things changed dramatically.
The best band I interviewed / saw live there was Sprung Monkey (California) circa 1999, although Budd (Queensland) and Fu Manchu (California) were great gigs as well. But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.Comment

Ha ha the resident BC band! I wonder if stink finger is still playing with them... He stole my ex for a month and had his way with her. I should go to that gig and throw beer at him, problem is he'd probably think that was rock and roll. But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.Comment

Closest I will ever get to rock and roll. Unless you count hardly leaving the house for 5 years in my 20s?But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.Comment

Just came across this thread. Most enjoyable.
I really love the nominations of Strange Fruit (hearing live recordings of Billy singing this live in the 50s are mesmerising - I voted for this as 1 of my 3 songs of the century when an online vote was taken in 1999) and Shipbuilding (another of my votes), I quoted this song more than once in a Post Grad economics thesis - it is a profound statement on the way we live and how our lives are ordered "Diving for dear life, when we could be diving for pearls" - not to mention Chet Baker's divine trumpet - a truly magical piece of music.Comment

Another song of a political nature that fascinates me is 'if white america told the truth for more than one day its world would fall apart' - by the Manics. Interesting lyrics and great music.Comment

They would've been better off playing at The Nash (R.I.P)Comment
