    story here

After four decades serving hot jam doughnuts outside a suburban train station, Footscray's Olympic Doughnuts is shutting up shop.
Maribyrnong Council on Monday posted to its Facebook page that the much-loved store would not reopen due to the ill health of its owner, Nick Tsiligiris.

It's not surprising. It's been closed since March. It's a shame because they only just opened the brand new you beaut facility. The family say they aren't going to keep the business going. I suppose that shop will become a Sugar Shack or some other necessary facilities Footscray urgently reququires.
I went whenever I was handy and I'm not big on donuts. But a properly made, perfectly cooked by Nick donut was perfection in itself. Crisp outside hot and jammy inside, hey that's a point hot jam! What are we going to do in winter now to keep warm?

And they were cheap. 80 cents each or 5 for 4 dollars, special deal.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I love the hot jam in the inside of a good doughnut too....until it starts to burn your mouth and you can't swallow cos it is too hot. Ouch!

Yep. When you've finished a proper jam donut the inside of your mouth should be burned beyond recognition!

We did our trade subjects at Willy tech. Playing kick to kick out on that oval in the middle of July with the wind coming straight off the Arctic hitting you right in the face, well a boy needed his hot jam donuts and fried dim sims just to get tgrough.

Olympic Doughnuts tradition to continue in Footscray, new leaseholder says

FOOTSCRAY foodies doughnut need to despair, with a new leaseholder planning to fill the hole left by the famed Olympic Doughnuts.

The owner of Yarraville cafe Dad and Dave’s plans to continue selling doughnuts and coffee at the site of the famous shop.

Russell Karim said he was a fan of the original shop and knew former owner Nick Tsigilaris from his university days.

“I used to grab his doughnuts on the way to uni and chat to him on my way,” Mr Karim said.

The cafe owner said he wanted to honour some of Mr Tsigilaris’ traditions while having their own style.

“We want to keep it as simple as Nick did, there will just be coffee and hot doughnuts,” Mr Karim said.

He also said they would be hiring former Olympic Doughnut staff and hoped people would enjoy the new shop as much as the previous one.

The family of Mr Tsigilaris said they wished the new leaseholder well but denied rumours that the doughnut recipe had been sold on.

The new doughnut shop is expected to open in a few weeks but a name had yet to be decided.

Oh well life moves on. I hope by "as basic" he means keeping it reasonable price wise to buy a donut. Didn't actually know that they sold coffee.

            Donuts.

THE HOLE left by the famed Olympic Doughnuts in Footscray has been filled with a new doughnut shop open for business.

              ● Cafe culture softening the edges of Melbourne’s ‘wild west’

Owner of Dad and Dave’s cafe Russell Karim opened Footscray Doughnuts and Coffee on Saturday, March 4.

He said it happened “really quickly” and the business had been doing well in its first week.

The cafe keeps it simple and sells hot jam doughnuts for $1 each or two and a coffee for $5.

“The reaction has been pretty good so far but we want people to come and try our doughnuts,” Mr Karim said.

The cafe owner previously said he wanted to honour some of Mr Tsigilaris’ traditions while having their own style.

“We want to keep it as simple as Nick did, there will just be coffee and hot doughnuts,” Mr Karim said.

Russell Karim said staff make, fry, and fill the doughnuts on site between 7 and 10am Monday to Saturday.

He said he was surprised by the positive reaction in the first week of operation and had sold out late on Monday afternoon.

“People are happy we are keeping the tradition of hot jam doughnuts in Footscray,” Mr Karim said.

He said the doughnuts were his own recipe but hoped people enjoyed still them.

“We’ve got school kids, university students and commuters and we are pretty busy from 2pm onwards, which is great and they seem to like it,” he said.

He said the coffee was proving particularly popular in the mornings.

The owner said they were planning to work on vegan, gluten free and a nutella doughnut special for the future.

Former Olympic Doughnut staff have been employed at the stand and Mr Karim said he hoped people would enjoy the new shop as much as the previous one.

The family of Mr Tsigilaris said they wished the new leaseholder well but denied rumours that the doughnut recipe had been sold on.

Footscray Doughnuts and Coffee is open for business at Footscray Railway Station on Irving St, Monday to Friday, 6am-6pm and Saturday, 7am-5.30pm.

Sounds good. I'm glad they are keeping it simple and are sticking to coffee and donuts. It'd be tempting to sell all sorts of crap but all we want there is coffee and donuts served quickly enough to catch the next train.

My condolences to his family and friends. Nick was a Footscray icon with the donut shop he had at Footscray station.
