    Phoblias

I was listening to Radio National this morning and they talked about phobias (there's a phobia about Greek words. Imagine that? You couldn't even describe what you are scrared off because phobia is a Greek word) personally I am scared of ice cream sticks, whenever I see one I am reminded of a doctor pushing one up my throat too far (I once had a client who had a phobia of fairy floss, they were scared of cotton candy! It made me feel a lot better about being scared of ice cream sticks)

The phobia they examined on RN was the fear of crumpets, people don't like all those holes and are terrified of crumpets. Do you have a phobia?
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I get a funny feeling coming over me when I sit on the dentist's chair. It is the thought of hands down my throat and I can't breath. I really have to take a deep breath, clear my nose and ensure I am right before I allow the dentist to start probing.

My favourite is aibohphobia, a fear of palindromes.

I used to be absolutely terrified of moths. Managed to overcome that one. Spiders and snakes, no problem.

But I'm really, really, really scared of mice.

The mice one is very common (especially amongst females) and particularly hard to overcome. I was almost killed by a rat when I was a kid and have (HAVE) to kill any that come near me, a decent whack with a stick will usually do it, their heads are very badly protected by the skullbone, for some reason rats have a really skinny skullbone.

I used to be okay with mice -- we bred a litter at school and I was fine then -- I think it was after living in too many slummy share-houses where the mice would come out and party every night. The day I woke up and found mouse poo under my pillow was the day I moved out.

I did that later on, but then it would bring me the dead ones, or better yet, dead ones bitten in half. That didn't help!

Or half-chewed them, so I'd have to put them out of their misery...

It's all starting to make sense now...

Let's hope nobody here suffers from Ortographobia - the fear of making spelling mistakes.

I was wondering who'd pick up on that first.

I'm not a good dental patient but I'm not sure it's a phobia.

Serious thread? Is this where I put my hand over my mouth trying to suppress the guffaws? If it isn't just text me when the time comes.
