    WOOF Fitness

I'm sure there are plenty of us on here who do a variety of things to stay fit, so this is the thread to tell us what you're doing.

And if you're not doing anything but you're keen to start, ask some questions, and get some insights that might kickstart your fitness routine.

For me personally, I've recently put together my own home gym with squat rack, DBs, lat pull/row machine and other bits and pieces, so I'm lifting 4 times a week, with a few extended walks spread out on days I'm not training heavy. I've grown to really dislike the commercial gym environment, with everyone on their phones while taking up equipment. Being able to listen to podcasts or my own workout favourites is also a big plus.

Plan is to go through a solid block of 9 weeks, then add more conditioning sessions (kettlebell swings, tyre flips, boxing intervals) to the mix to get nice and lean over the winter.

Ultimately I want to get back into BJJ/MMA but that will probably have to wait until later in the year (or even next year).

So, what are you doing/want to do?
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

My main activity is walking for about an hour every morning. Last year I downsized my home and moved to East Melbourne. I walk around the Fitzroy gardens and the G. Friday nights I will do two laps of the Tan with friends.

I really should do some light weights. As you get older, you lose some strength. I am really not sure what I should do though. I own some barebells, but haven't used them for awhile.

Most of mine is down to a big helping hand from the genetics God. I have never dieted, I've smoked and done drugs most of my life (I've never drunk though, I despise alchohol and alcoholics), I've gone on benders that have lasted weeks (I went around to the milk bar once when I was 16 and didn't turn up again for two weeks. I was in Sydney but I had no idea how I'd gotten there. Mum was furious) but a few weeks ago I had my blood test and the doctor said that it was the best set of results he'd had seen that month and whatever I was doing I had to keep it up.

I think apart from the genetic thing it's the fact that I rarely drink anything but water and I always have a water bottle in arms reach.

Well done. Sounds like some healthy eating as well.

Ever since I hit on the six minor meals a day as opposed to three big ones I have the energy to get through the day. I have been practically anorexic (seriously) most of my adult life. Late last year I was weighing in at 52 kilos and that ain't healthy. But with a lot of work and eating properly (pretty much forcing myself to eat when it's time) I hit the scale at 58.5 this morning. Powdered full cream milk helps-I'm going through a pack a week as well as as much protein as I can find!

I used to carry a few (in fact quite a few) extra kilos. My doctor said I should get out and play a sport. So I went out and took up two and now play both at a high level. Lawn Bowls and Darts. Needless to say I still carry quite a few extra kilos.

Heh! It's funny how something as light as darts can add so many extra kilos to its participants.

I have hypertension and it's down to family history. I've always been a non smoker and now days I rarely drink.
Both parents died very young from heart related problems so over the last couple of years I've been pushing exercise with my son who was around 30 kg over weight and I'm 10 kg over were I need to be.
We started walking 5 k a night for 5 days and after a few months would start interval running using lamp post as stop and start markers.
We did that for a year and my son lost 20 kg and I dropped 5 kg but with my age I started getting soft tissue niggles and the exercise dropped off.
We got back into again with cycling and now we do 10 k a night and use the charity rides as motivation to keep going.
Cardio has improved but weight is about the same so we are maintaining. I also think I need to do some weight work.

I walk to my local shops quite a bit and very occasionally do evening walking.

Great stuff Hotdog. I go walking with my son too. We have set ourselves the goal of walking every street inside the boundary sof the city of Footscray. It's a lot of streets.

Thanks mate. I was sorting through my dad's stuff and I found an old map of Footscray he had with the boundaries pre City of Maribyrnong. I like to walk and I wondered how long it would take to walk every street of Footscray and decided that there is only one way to find out.

Yeah it is good walking locally like to the shops etc. Good exercise and no need to drive there when its only a minute or so away.

The next big challenge for you Twodogs after walking all the Footscray streets would be walking all the streets of the rest of the City of Maribyrnong - now that's tough

You're thinking of the shops and the area around there aren't you? I mean the old city of Footscray council area. It's is a bit bigger than the-it includes Yarraville and Seddon and West Footscray. From the banks of the Maribyrnong to Ashley street to Maribyrnong rd across to Francis st. It'll take us at least a year.
