First, they have to real. Not a fake ape, like the fake ape next to 'Clarence Beeks' as a fake ape in Jim Bulishi's outfit in Trading Places.
For me, I think it's a harder role for a primate to pull off a role in a drama of drama/action film. Comedic monkeys, like the monkey in Hangover Part 2 I thought did put in a worthy effort though.
So for me, the monkey in Raiders Of The Lost Arc gets my formal nomination. He was breaking ground as a cameo monkey in the early 80's before every primate moved out to Hollywood and was doing it. He had an on screen presence firstly helping the Nazis with his hissing and even heil hitlering them, but then joining Indy before acting his own death by eating a poison date. So much range of character and range of scenes worked, including a death scene, so me I can't go passed him.
