    RUOK Day - 13 September 2018

    Guys,

In the wake of AFL players (and our very own Tom Boyd; Travis Cloke) admitting to have suffered "Mental Health" issue and our WOOFers reported to have been through tough situations themselves in the past and maybe dealing with some issues right now.

This thread is for people to share their journey dealing with mental health and bring awareness to everyone how difficult it is when you are in those situations or having supported someone in those times.

    Please support RUOK day.

R U OK? Day is a national day of action in September dedicated to reminding people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, "R U OK?", in a meaningful way, because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a difference to anyone who might be struggling.
Wouldn't it be great if everyone starting the day by looking out for your colleagues, friends, family members and making sure they are OK.

Please see the official RUOK website for some tips to struck a conversation that could change a life.

Btw, I have ran this through GVGjr and he thought it is a great idea

Some Mental Health materials could be found here.

Good mental health improves your ability to cope with life's challenges. Read about where to find mental health information, support and advice.

If you are seriously injured or know someone who is at risk of harm right now, call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance. Find more urgent support options.

If your workplace is supporting Well-being, it's worth checking if they are running mental Health First Aid courses. It's worth part-taking to be prepared and deal with MH situations.

It's quite a big thing at my work, screen savers, signs everywhere and a bit of a script to follow

I'll be setting some time aside to talk to a few people. We basically do this in our one-on-one discussions anyway but if it helps just one colleague or friend then it's time well spent.

Times have changed, I can remember living in Bendigo years ago and a mate of mine had split from his long term girl friend (long term for him anyway) and we agreed to meet at our local pub to talk about it where he proceeded to cry a few times. In those days we had a simple rule amongst our mates, "If you cry, you buy" so sharing your troubles back in those days was never really encouraged.
I've often regretted that many in the group I used to know back in those days were never really encouraged to talk about their problems.

I encourage you all to reach out to friends, family and colleagues if you feel they might not be their normal self.

Thanks Doc26. At my workplace, they have a free coffee kart going this morning where you could grab a coffee with someone and start the conversation.

Questions for the conversation starter about mental health and overall Wellbeing...

            - What practices have you adopted in order to optimize your own MH?
            - Who has the biggest impact on the person you have become?
            - What are some things you want to accomplish in your career?

but really the questions could be open ended to generate discussion and awareness about one's state of mind.

Btw, I am wearing bright yellow T-Shirt to support this campaign.

I like RUOK day, it's a great message. Let's also remember that mental health can be more than anxiety and depression. It can involve some challenging behaviours and presentations. Psychotic episodes, mania, ideas of reference etc. Can also result in significant psychosocial disability, making day to day life really hard and engagement in civic life incredibly difficult.

About 113,000 Victorians in this space are about to find accessing professional support very difficult. Our community based mental health services are collapsing and NDIS is not covering all bases. $0 dollars for previously block funded services in Victoria, $200m in other states. NDIS was supposed to cover it, but stats are showing up to 70% of that cohort are being excluded, or seeing services reduced.

We will see a spike in people acutely unwell. A spike in behaviours that generally see people ostracised by the community. So just remember the compassion and support we offer to our friends around RUOK etc can be really valuable for that group too. More than ever.

Every day needs to be RU OK day.

I work in the disabilty (well I worked) industry but now it's a train wreck. Nobody knows what is happenening (clients and providers) everyone is worried that the NDIS people will ring and trick you into a tick'n'flick assessment that you will be stuck to for years even though you didn't know it was an assessment when they rang.

At the moment I am doing an aged care course. At least they haven't decided to fix that yet.
