    Best Antihero, I.e. A bad/good character or good/bad character?

    Can be from literature, TV or movies.

    Characters who best represent the antihero. Or otherwise put, a morally ambiguous character. A good character that sometimes does very bad things. Or a bad character that sometimes does very good things. Or a lot of Clint Eastwood movies characters! Would be interesting to hear your nominations and why.

    A definition:

    An antihero or antiheroine is a protagonist in a story who lacks conventional heroic qualities and attributes such as idealism, courage and morality.Although antiheroes may sometimes do the right thing, it is not always for the right reasons, often acting primarily out of self-interest or in ways that defy conventional ethical codes.

    For example,

    Detective Vic Mackie (The Shield)

    Sure he shot a cop in the face, shot and/or killed people, tortured people, stole millions from the Armenian money train, led to people dying, kidnapped people, trafficked drugs, stole, assaulted people. - But that aside, got shit done, broke the rules to help victims, gave it to the man along the way and did as much good (if not more), like saving people or getting violent killers/rapists off the street as he did bad. Arguably did much of it for reasons of supporting his family.
    Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023

    I nominate Gene Hunt from Life on Mars. Violent, sexist, ruthless, appalling - but who would you rather see kicking a door down if you were in trouble?

    Or maybe Avon from Blake's Seven. I was so in love with that evil, caramel-voiced bastard.

            Richard III is the greatest anti hero of all time.
            They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

                      Richard III is the template from which all other anti-heroes are drawn.

                        And this;

                        Now is the winter of our discontent
                        Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
                        And all the clouds that lour’d upon our house
                        In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.
                        Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths;
                        Our bruised arms hung up for monuments;
                        Our stern alarums chang’d to merry meetings,
                        Our dreadful marches to delightful measures.
                        Grim-visag’d war hath smooth’d his wrinkled front;

                        Is THE greatest soliloquy of all time. It's a brilliant way to start a play.

                          Vic Deakins (John Travolta) in Broken Arrow. Well actually pretty much any of John Travolta's villains- Vincent Vega, Sean Archer (Face/Off)

                          One of my favourite lines is after killing the main villain with a torch to the throat- You know, I never killed anyone before. I mean, I dropped bombs on Bagdahd, but never face to face... I don't see what the big deal is, I really don't.

                            Don't know if he counts as a bad guy, but considering Major Charles Emerson Winchester III spent the day majority of his run on M*A*S*H as a arrogant, pompous horse's petoot, he can lay claim to some of the most heartwarming and selfless moments of the series.

                              Not many females here (anti-heroines?) Did anyone see Suranne Jones in Dr Foster? She was amazing.
