Gaming - what are you playing

Right which woofers game? What are you playing now?

I've been playing Xcom 2 with the long war of the chosen beta build mod but have recently started playing more Animal Crossing with the new game out on the Switch.

And I always play some Super Smash Bros Ultimate

I'm playing a ton of Switch right now because everyone's home meaning access to the TV and PS4 is pretty limited. I've got Animal Crossing going but see that more akin to a stress reliever than a game, although a virtual world where you can do whatever you want is pretty utopian right now.

Playing heaps of Smash too, and have gotten sucked right in by the multi-tiered marketing platform it really is, so I've also been playing some Persona 5 and Splatoon. They'll never get me to play Fire Emblem though.

Honestly I think it has some fantastic games. I put 2-300 hours into Three Houses and FE7 on GBA is an all time classic. 3 Houses is a good entry point if you ever crack (I doubt you'll regret it)

Sorry dawg but after they put Byleth in Smash they need to learn that their actions have consequences.

I bought a few games on the PS4 store Japanese game sale; have Devil May Cry, Yakuza 0 and Fire Pro Wrestling in the clip and ready to play if my partner and/or her sister ever leave the house/TV again.

I try not to game too much as it is a slippery slide for me and productivity goes out the window but my son loves it. He's big into Minecraft and there's an Easter sale on the PS4 store so we just loaded up on some cheap games like Ratchet & Clank and some racing games.

If the lockdown period goes on too long, I might crack and finally dive into Red Dead Redemption 2.

I legit don't get the hate. Byleth is an actual interesting fighter who isn't another sword boy/girl. I agree that there are some FE characters who are redundant (the echos most of all) but why would Nintendo/Smash not include a character from a smash hit game they just released? Is it really worse than the next one being from ARMS? At least people played and liked 3 Houses. Who's hyped for an ARMS character?

If I learned one thing from last year it's that my not buying a game on principle doesn't make a difference (Pokemon). I'm happy that I at least saved myself from a sub-par game on that one though. I strongly recommend looking at 3 Houses in the future, how ever far in the future it may be, when you're looking for something new and it's on sale perhaps.

I have Yakuza 0 from a Humble Bundle and should really start it up soon.

I was mostly joking about FE, but OH MAN Pokemon S/S was such a huge bummer. I was so excited for an open world game for a bigger screen and instead got probably the laziest game I can recall playing. They've taken advantage of absolutely none of the pathways the game format and medium presents.

Re Red Dead - it's fun but it's a little too easy? I honestly got kind of frustrated with the lack of challenge the story presented, and felt more like I was watching a movie.

I had both versions pre-ordered on Amazon but cancelled once I saw how the game was looking. Huge potential largely wasted on a 3DS port

Re: Gaming - what are you playing

Ok. With 2 small kids my gaming is now restricted to Friday or Saturday nights.

I've recently finished Disco Elysium, which may be the weirdest and most abstract and thought provoking game I've ever played.

The concept is you awake in a hotel room, hungover. You have no memory of who you are, why you are there, or what you need to do.
The game gives you very little instruction, or guide as to what you need to do and even less on how things work in the game.
You learn by interacting and questioning people, and soon discover you are a washed-up burned out detective hell bent on destroying themself in a haze of drugs and alcohol. This is the cause of your total amnesia.
Oh and you soon work out you're working on a high profile murder case that is linked to a political struggle that threatens to lead the fictitious country you are in towards anarchy and revolution.

The most intriguing element of the game is the fact that by interacting with your world, questioning people, wearing different combos of clothing and items, you slowly begin the process of regaining your memory. In the process you have lots of intriguing inner dialogue with the several distinct parts of your inner psyche.
Employing right dialogue, earns you points which you can allocate to different parts of your psychological makeup, which in turn provide you with further dialogue choices with other people, or allow you to perceive more things around you which may then unlock alternative plot lines or alternative ways to solve problems.

The way you treat your character, also impacts how you experience the game. You can choose to smoke, drink and drug your way through the game or set him on a clean living path of redemption.
You can also align your character to either be a left wing bolshie or a right wing fascist, or a ultra liberalist. Each movement towards a philosophy changes how you engage with people and the world around you, and vice-versa.

Each way opens up new ways to solve the quest, and each also come with negative impacts.

Similarly investing too heavily in certain skills can also produce begative outcomes. Plonk too many points into the Psyche Trait Conceptualisation and you may just find links to things that aren't there, which may in turn cause you to jump to wrong conclusions.

Its a brilliant, thought provoking game, with an immense amount of original thought and philosophical dialogue. Visually its very immersive too.

That's a fantastic write up. Only had a vague concept of the game (people I play with mentioning in passing how they died in an early party stupidly IIRC) but that just there got me properly interested

It is unlike anything I've ever played before. Ostensibly its a point n click and dialogue game. You don't actually physically control the actions. Your skills, and the probability modelling based on your skills determine the outcome of your choices.
But its really doing it a disservice to describe it as point n click..
One thing to add, resist the temptation to save scum and replay if you fail in any of the hundreds of choices. Its not a game where getting things right is the aim. Rather its about living with choices and working around what outcomes are presented. The game has multiple routes to travel its course and you actually increase the replayability factor by living with the outcomes of your choices.
The first time i played it, i kept dying before the game really kicked off because I just did not understand what the heck was going on in the opening scene. Once i got it though it blew my mind and gave me a great insight into how I needed to approach the game. Its just so original as a concept.

Re: Gaming - what are you playing

I typically play a lot of computer games, although just this week have begun playing friends online.

I typically spend most of my time playing Football Manager, which is an enormous time vanisher, and also dabble in Civ, although that feels like more of a slogfest and the AI is incredibly frustratingly dumb.

I like board games too, and bought the digital version of Scythe a couple of days ago to play against a few friends and that has been a huge success. Really fun involved game that you can finish inside of 90 minutes (unlike Civ). Just bought Galaxy Truckers on a recommendation from a mate, which again is a digital version of the boardgame, and also seems a lot of fun. I anticipate that this may be my main social interaction for a while.
I should leave it alone but you're not right
