A Myer store that has been in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs for more than 40 years is closing.

On Wednesday, Myer Holdings Limited announced the store at Knox Shopping Centre would cease trading by the end of July 2021.

A statement said Myer was taking into account its rising online sales as well as the number of other stores in close proximity to Knox.

Stores close by include outlets at Eastland, Fountain Gate, Chadstone and Frankston.

“We will continue to make targeted improvements to our store network, whilst reducing space and improving the offer for our loyal customers,” Myer’s CEO, John King, said in a statement.

“We thank our Knox team members for their significant contribution to Myer, and we look forward to continuing to serve our loyal customers either in nearby stores or online.

“Myer will support all impacted team members through a period of consultation and will look to redeploy as many team members as possible.”

This comes after Myer closed its Logan store in Queensland in January 2019 and Hornsby in Sydney in January 2020.

Space reductions have also been undertaken at Belconnen, Cairns, Emporium and Morley.

Westfield Knox shopping centre was officially opened on November 9, 1977, and originally had a three-storey Myer.

As a little tacker I lived near the SE Freeway exit on Wellington road and if I climbed the local trees high enough I could see what we called then "Knox City" on the horizon! The big Myer sign was iconic for me back in those days, as it represented being close to going to Timezone or the movies, or to buy a new pair of sneakers at Rebel Sport back in the day!
    TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

Lots of memories with Knox. Went to school near there back in the day. The Irish pub there which recently closed down was a local favourite. Remember going to mates birthday parties at Timezone there long time ago now Nowadays I'm discovering more and more of the inner west - the Doggies heartland

Remember going to the Myer out there as a kid in the early 80's, we'd always end up at the Caribbean Gardens after.
        Is Caribbean Gardens still going??

'Sad time': Much-loved Melbourne market closes after 55 years

Caribbean Gardens in Melbourne's east will close its doors to the public after 55 years in operation, with management citing the dire financial circumstances wrought by the pandemic for the closure of the much-loved attraction.

The 40-hectare market and garden area located in Scoresby, in the foothills of the Dandenongs, closed due to public health restrictions at the onset of the pandemic.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday evening – which attracted more than 5000 comments, many of them expressing deep sadness – the business announced the closure would be permanent.

"COVID-19 forced the suspension of the market for the very first time in its history and has now been confirmed closed for the foreseeable future. As a privately-run market in these current circumstances it is simply unviable (sic) to reopen," the post said.

"Whilst no immediate plans are in place to replace the market lands, they do form part of a 500-acre future masterplan.

"Although this is a hard decision and a sad time we must celebrate the market's achievement and thank each and every customer, stallholder, visitor and staff for their partnership and for making Caribbean Market the icon it became."

The market, which opened in 1965 and is owned by the wealthy Spooner family, has been visited by 40 million visitors since its establishment, according to its owners.

It included a market that sold a variety of unique products and amusements aimed at children including a mini-golf course, a train around its perimeter, a jungle boat ride around Lake Caribbean and a chair lift.

A 2013 report by the Motion Picture Association of America identified Caribbean Gardens as one of the most notorious hotspots for the sale of pirated DVDs.

The report said the market had between 10 and 20 individual market sellers "offering counterfeit region one and two DVDs, together with other sellers offering burnt DVDs of recently released titles".

The site, nestled between Stud Road in the east, Ferntree Gully Road to the north and the EastLink freeway in the west, was originally used by a handful of stallholders selling from their car boots and for water ski shows on the lake.

More recently, it had more than 1000 stallholders and thousands poured through the eye-catching front gates on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
