Yep, just missed out on his letter.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

I always liked him, and arguably saved the monarchy. I always feel for the spouse in these circumstances, nearly 80 years together and it no more. A sign of the changing of the guard to come shortly. Vale.

His comment to an original Australian elder in 2002. How gross.

Yep had a history of inappropriate comments.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

And 80 years of public service including WW2 service too. To be fair.

Whatever you think of him, it's clear he didn't care what anyone thought of him. Certainly a rarity in society today.

Is the public service just his 'royal duties' or did he do something else that justified the life of privilege he led?

It's OK to say people had some good traits and some bad traits.

I did find it really weird that an ex-prime minister sought to politicise his death by bringing political correctness/ culture war into the equation but I guess that's the world we live in.

He led a life that was privileged, and the concept of royalty doesn't sit well with me. But I also reckon other times he was probably sick to death of his existence.

Apparently he served well and should be remembered for it:

He also said some really racist/ inappropriate stuff too.
                        TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

Read about his service, he did far, far more than duties for a wage. I agree with Jeemak for the most part, although his service vs some comments isn’t equal in proportion, and quite seperate to that the overall timing of the discussion. I prefer to have the body in the ground before debating ones legacy. I personally think the dead can be afforded that. I can’t recall another RIP/VALE thread that wasn’t a short, sharp offering of well wishes on someone’s death. But, to each their own. I’m moving on to the footy threads.

Saw this in the Kennel Kapers April 2021 edition in regards to Prince Phillip.

                            Editor’s Spot
                            By Michael Bromley

With the recent passing of Prince Phillip, I was reminded of an article written by The Age newspaper journalist Tony Wright that I
clipped from The Saturday Age* nearly ten years ago.

The article describes the prince visiting Melbourne in 1945, at the latter end of World War 2 when he was second in command of a Royal Navy destroyer.

Phillip, who was 24 at the time, spent several weeks in Melbourne and apparently one of his Melbourne-born fellow officers introduced the unattached Phillip to two sisters whose parents owned the Derrimut Hotel in Sunshine.

Phillip, who was then Prince Phillip of Greece and Denmark, stayed as a guest at the then quaint but modest Derrimut and would be seen occasionally by surprised locals walking to the Sunshine railway station to buy newspapers.

Tony Wright’s article sparked my interest because my family lived in central Sunshine for many years, just a couple of Bernie Quinlan droppunts from the Derrimut Hotel which I’m sure is familiar to many who grew up in the west.

I’m trying to imagine a young Duke sitting in the Derrimut’s front bar drinking beer and chatting to the locals. Perhaps they regaled him with stories about the local football team, the Footscray Bulldogs who were travelling quite well at that stage of the season but would ultimately just miss finishing in what was then the “final four”.

It was only a couple of years later that Phillip married Princess Elizabeth, who later became Queen Elizabeth II while he became the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Consort taking up residence in the grand Buckingham Palace.

I wonder if, in his latter years, he ever reflected on his days in Sunshine.

I’m not sure when I’ll next visit the Derrimut but I’ll be sure to check whether there’s a plaque commemorating his visit.

“A jolly good time in land of combine harvesters”, 11 June 2011— Author: Tony Wright, The Age Newspaper (Nine Entertainment Co./Fairfax Media)
